There Is No Paradise Where I Ran Away To (14 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 23
“Thirty thousand mori? Isn’t that quite a large sum for you right now, Miss Ebelline?”
Gideon scratched his head in great bewilderment, seemingly taken aback by the unexpectedly high amount. Seeing his will and enthusiasm falter, Vivian grew anxious.
“Regardless of why you need such an amount, living as you are now, under the Duke’s protection, is probably the only way to avoid a miserable fate.”
His reply was utterly different from what she’d hoped for, and she sank into deep disappointment. Noticing Vivian’s sharply downturned lips, he realized his blunder but still scooted closer, his eyes pleading.
“There was a time when the old money openly shunned the new money, preventing them from even gaining a foothold in high society. Though people’s attitudes have changed enough now to even grant titles, who knows? Behind closed doors, they might still be calling new money vulgar and crude. But do you know why they acted that way?”
Vivian hesitated briefly, then shook her head.
“Because earning money is considered a dirty business.”
The Baron’s answer only plunged her deeper into confusion.
Why would earning money be dirty?
To Vivian, who had only recently come to understand that money was essential for eating, clothing, and shelter, this answer felt utterly contradictory.
“You can’t possibly imagine the humiliation and indignities I endured just to collect payment after selling a carriage.”
Gideon smiled faintly, sifting through memories of a distant past laid out before his eyes. Even though they weren’t happy memories, the joy of looking back on the path he’d walked always made his heart race.
“I’ve been slapped, knelt outside mansions all night, and even been dragged off by constables more than once.”
“But isn’t receiving payment for selling a carriage only natural? Why would you, my Lord Baron, suffer such humiliation?… I truly don’t understand. It’s those who refuse to pay who should be hauled away by constables—not honest sellers.”
Seeing her innocent, bewildered eyes—as if she viewed this incomprehensible world as something from another realm—Gideon suppressed a laugh that threatened to burst out.

He looked up at her, his eyebrows drooping: “My hand… has no strength.”
“Shall I… feed you?” she asked tentatively.
He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
Thinking she was drowning, he jumped in without hesitation to save her, but nearly drowned himself. In the end, it was she who swam over to rescue him, giving him air underwater.
After emerging from the water, his ear tips turned red. He lightly brushed his cheek, tucking his sideburns behind his ear, revealing delicate, pink-tinged ear tips. He lowered his gaze, too embarrassed to look at her.
