The Duke’s manor in Havenbridge retained the same interior decor and exterior appearance as when the Ebellines had lived there—unlike the Rodinia estate, which had undergone several renovations. Perhaps for that reason, the manor still held the full glory of the Ebelline family intact.

The study door opened, and Lawrence appeared through it, meeting them for the first time in a year. Though time and hardship had softened the sharpness of his eyes, the gray irises within still held an unyielding strength.

His face, now covered in unkempt golden stubble, hardly resembled the honored Ebelline of old.

Confined to the manor with nothing worthwhile to do, Lawrence had spent his days tending the garden himself, caring for the horses in the stable, raising goats, and occasionally strolling leisurely through the meadow behind the manor.

Thus, his attire was utterly unlike that of a nobleman. To an unknowing observer, he might well have been mistaken for the owner of a ranch.

At Edwin’s attempt at a friendly smile, Lawrence’s brows furrowed sharply instead. Monica followed close behind Lawrence as he stomped forward.

Luring Monica—now residing in her natal house of Preston—back to the manor had proven far easier than forcing Lawrence himself into submission through endless threats. Moreover, Monica, already aware of Edwin’s true nature, quickly acknowledged that she had indeed fallen neatly into his trap.

Since Vivian strongly resembled Monica in facial features, it was easy to imagine what an older Vivian might look like. Yet Monica, compared to both Lawrence and Vivian, possessed a more rational and composed temperament.

Aside from that single difference, mother and daughter looked remarkably alike.

“It’s been a while, Lawrence. And you, Madam—have you been well?”

He cheerfully extended his greeting not only to Lawrence seated across from him but also to Monica, who had taken a seat on the sofa some distance away.

Lawrence gave a scornful snort, showing no intention of warmly welcoming Edwin. He stood firmly, unwavering in his guard, as if facing a true adversary.

“Do we really appear to be doing well in your eyes?”

Despite Lawrence’s open hostility toward his immaculate, flawless smile, Edwin responded with an even more perfectly upright grin.

“I merely asked because you seem to have happily taken up life as a farmer free from worries about crops.”
