I stopped by South City to take a photograph—just a solo one.

At first, I thought visiting the photography studio in South City was Edwin’s errand, so I stood quietly behind, waiting. But when he beckoned me with a simple gesture and seated me before the camera, I finally realized I was the one who needed to have my picture taken.

It was the first time I’d ever stood before a camera, yet it felt no different from sitting for a portrait, so I accepted it easily enough. The only remarkable thing was how astonishingly fast the whole process finished—several times, no, hundreds of times quicker than a painted portrait.

The only regret I had upon leaving the studio was that I couldn’t see the result right away.

Back in the carriage, a question arose in my mind.

‘But why did he take my photo?’

I quickly dismissed the thought, for it seemed no different from gifting me a cello, dresses, or jewels—just another lavish indulgence.

After finishing all our business in South City, the carriage headed toward Edwin’s mansion in Golden Bay.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, a rosy hue seeped through the carriage window. I caught the light in my palm, opening and closing my hand. Watching this, Edwin smiled.

Remembering that the sunset coloring the sky resembled the hues of my homeland, I’d foolishly tried grasping that intangible light like a child. Embarrassed that Edwin had noticed, my cheeks flushed, and I cleared my throat before quietly folding my hands.

Just as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, the carriage stopped.

Had we arrived?

Peeking cautiously out the window, I saw the simple silhouette of the mansion. Stepping down from the carriage, Vivian faced the Golden Bay residence.

Unlike Edwin’s usual style, lights were lit throughout the modest house. It looked untouched by renovations, preserving memories of the past. A small, cozy garden, a wooden fence, and even a goat ambling aimlessly stirred something tender in Vivian’s heart.

After the butler assigned me a room, I flung open the door to my immaculately prepared bedroom and looked down at the tiny garden cloaked in evening shadows.
