After climbing into the carriage while nestled in his arms, Sophie appeared. Her pale face suggested she already knew Edwin had left Vivian behind and departed alone.

Sophie kept apologizing as she helped Vivian change clothes and fixed her hair.

It was Edwin who put on her shoes last, and when he kissed the top of her foot after stroking her ankle for a long while, Vivian nearly jumped out of her skin worrying about Sophie noticing.

Sophie deliberately pretended not to see and instead adjusted Vivian’s clothing.

After their tearful struggle, they finally arrived at Sanford Harbor and boarded the ship bound for Preston, and the constant anxiety that had gripped her melted away like snow.

Inside the cabin, escorted by Edwin, unspeakable things occurred. Edwin kept Vivian confined to the narrow bed until just before the high sun dipped below the horizon.

Afraid she might never escape the bed again, Vivian barely managed to calm Edwin down. Claiming she wanted to see the sunset, she dressed and stepped out of the cabin with him.

While the cabin remained oppressively warm, the cold sea breeze on deck was sharp enough to make her shiver. When Vivian hunched her shoulders, he wrapped his arms firmly around her.

As they stepped onto the deck, the rippling red glow on the horizon imprinted deeply onto Vivian’s retinas. It was a sunset so breathtakingly beautiful it instantly cleared her mind.
