“Lady Zimmermann… has passed away.”

The blue eyes reading through the documents stopped there. They rose toward Abernathy, unmoved even by this shocking news—calm and ordinary, as if hearing an everyday matter.

In contrast, Abernathy’s eyes were moist, and his voice trembled slightly as he delivered the news.

“Charlotte is dead?”

Abernathy lowered his head deeply and pushed the mail addressed to Edwin forward.

“The obituary arrived via messenger, and the letter from the Baron along with the letters Lady Zimmermann left for the two of you were mailed earlier and arrived together today.”

Edwin opened the obituary first. It was adorned with the date and location of Charlotte’s funeral, as well as the names Charlotte Zimmermann and Gideon Zimmermann.

“Though the mail arrived quickly, I suspect it will be difficult for you to attend the funeral.”

Next, Edwin opened Gideon’s letter addressed to him. It was written before Charlotte’s death. It was no different from her usual letters—containing a heartfelt plea, explaining her illness and begging him to visit just once.

This time, Vivian’s name was absent. It seemed she didn’t dare to hope for Vivian’s visit, only wishing for Edwin’s.

“They say that even in her final moments, she kept calling desperately for Your Grace and Miss Ebelline.”

After finishing Gideon’s letter, Edwin’s indifferent gaze lingered on the two letters from Charlotte resting on the desk. Yet he did not open them. Staring silently at the names written on the envelopes, he took a key from his jacket pocket and unlocked the bottom drawer.

He placed inside the two letters addressed to Edwin and Vivian, along with Gideon’s obituary, then locked the drawer.

“Prepare clothes and a horse. I’m going to Perrington.”

Edwin closed the documents and stood up.
