Edwin’s eyes grew icy cold as he read the letter. Even the flames dancing in the fireplace couldn’t warm the frost in his gaze—only made it colder still.

Charlotte had miscarried.

Gideon’s letter, written with deliberate care, word by word, told of Charlotte’s suffering—how much she had wept after losing the child, how deeply she struggled, and who she longed to see.

At the end of his detailed account, Gideon had left a request: that Vivian and Edwin please visit the baron’s estate together.

After finishing the letter, Edwin glanced at Vivian, still fast asleep. The morning curtains remained tightly shut. Thanks to the wine she’d drunk the night before, she slept deeply and sweetly, oblivious to anyone entering or leaving the room.

He had deliberately kept the sun out of the bedroom so Vivian could sleep soundly.

Whenever he looked at Vivian’s sleeping face, memories of Rottermond inevitably resurfaced—but this time was utterly different. This Vivian would open her eyes the moment he shook her gently awake.

He brushed his fingertip against her thick lashes, and Vivian, tickled, scrunched up her eyes. A lazy smile slipped from his lips. Vivian squirmed, groaned softly, and finally opened her eyes.

“…Why are you already awake?”

Still unaware that morning had arrived, her drowsy voice sounded as sweet as last night’s wine. Vivian groped around with sleepy eyes, searching for light between the curtains—but Edwin pulled her closer, lying down beside her.

“Go back to sleep. Morning is still far off.”

It was a lie—for Vivian’s sake.

Last night, she’d grown tipsy from just a few sips of wine, so she must be utterly exhausted. Knowing her diligence, if she realized morning had come, she’d drag herself up despite her fatigue. To help her sleep, Edwin gently patted her slender shoulders.
