Vivian gazed at the sunset of the waning winter. Each day, as the sun set, her heart withered along with it.

Once this furious winter passed, a damp, tender spring would return. The realization that time had already flowed so far sank her mood anew.

‘Let’s go to Preston next spring.’

‘But only if I’m still alive.’

‘Only then can I go to Preston, see the flowers, and laugh.’

The voice that had whispered those words against her neck inside the carriage pricked her heart like needles.

How strange it was. Back then, she’d felt as though she possessed the whole world—so joyful, so content—yet why did it now sound unbearably painful?

Nothing about the memory had changed. What had changed was her heart.

Thus, she needed to tuck this memory beneath the horizon along with the setting sun. Once forgotten, it would no longer wound her heart.

When Sophie entered the bedroom, Vivian turned her eyes away, unable to fully consign every memory of him to the fading sunlight. Reading Sophie’s expression, Vivian’s lips tightened.

“Again today—when you deliver the invitations and letters from noblewomen, not a single letter reaches me, does it?”

Lately, the letters she expected never arrived—not from Charlotte after her release, nor from Baron Zimmermann, nor even from Theo. All three had vanished without a trace, as if deliberately severing ties.

Moreover, letters and invitations from other noblewomen were handed to her stripped of their envelopes, with only the contents plainly delivered. When she asked why, Abernathy merely smiled and turned away without answering.

Vivian’s suspicion swelled. She felt she knew who stood behind all this, yet couldn’t fathom the motive well enough to be certain.

Even if she accepted that her request to see Charlotte had been ignored, intercepting letters crossed a line.
