Late afternoon, Abernathy headed toward the study where Edwin was. He had just finished a meeting with the male board members.

During the week the board members had stayed, Edwin seemed to be trying to refrain from spending nights with Vivian. Edwin usually carried out whatever he set his mind to—even if it meant exercising restraint and patience.

Yet, in front of Vivian, that self-control seemed to fail him; before long, the two were again spending the night together and sharing breakfast in the morning.

That was the nature of their relationship—one so intense they couldn’t bear to be apart even for a moment, losing even their self-restraint.

However, contrary to appearances, a strange and negative undercurrent flowed between them. An inexplicable, massive wall stood between the two.

Abernathy had a vague idea of the reason and now felt it was time to speak up.

Moreover, with Baroness Beitnes’s earnest request, he intended to leverage her authority to intervene.

“Baron Zimmermann has sent word, Your Grace.”

Abernathy opened with this news upon entering the study—the first reason he’d sought Edwin out.

“What news is it?”

Charlotte Windler had become Charlotte Zimmermann. Despite Elizabeth Zimmermann’s vehement opposition, the baron had gone ahead with their union out of love, and after much hardship, the two had finally become husband and wife. The news that would follow was predictable.

“Baroness Zimmermann says she is with child.”

Edwin nodded calmly, as if he had expected it. He was absorbed in flipping through a document and signing his name.

“But….”

Abernathy’s troubled tone as he shifted the topic caught Edwin’s attention.
