El gently rubbed his constricted throat, clasped his hands together, and lowered them, pretending to be a meek and docile child.

“Come here and sit down, won’t you?”

Raphelian set the tray on the tea table prepared in one corner of the room and called out to El.

El, who had been standing awkwardly near the door, slowly swept his ruby-red eyes around the room once before shuffling his feet forward hesitantly.

“I didn’t wake you—you were sleeping soundly. I brought this because I thought you might be hungry. You already know our chef is quite skilled.”

Raphelian gestured with his chin toward the steaming-hot milk and freshly baked bread, from which warm vapor curled invitingly.

“Briel and Riello are having their snack time right now. Children need to eat well while they’re growing, after all.”

El’s gaze remained fixed on the table, unmoving.

This was worlds apart from the moldy bread scavenged from garbage heaps.

Overwhelmed by the tempting sight and aroma, El unconsciously gulped.

He suddenly became aware of a hunger he hadn’t noticed until now.

El, who had been staring as if entranced, shook his head vigorously.

How fickle people are.

His firm resolve to leave this house immediately was now wavering under the savory scent of fresh bread.

‘But it must taste amazing.’
