“I’m sorry to make you move so early in the morning.”

Sander, seemingly struck by urgent business, approached Erina just as the sun began to rise, asking her to hurry back to the Marquis’s residence and requesting her understanding.

Erina had to quickly prepare to depart.

“It’s fine.”

As soon as she finished getting ready, the carriage carrying Sander, Erina, and Revil set off in haste.

Erina glanced down at the child, sensing a small warmth beside her.

Gently stroking Revil’s head, who had been trying desperately since their conversation last night not to drift even slightly away from her.

Taking Revil—the child brought in as heir—out of House Iols would not be an easy task for Erina, who was trying to leave the Iols family altogether.

Yet her own childhood kept tugging at her heels, repeatedly stirred by the sight of this child.

She had sworn never to live with regrets.

If she left alone, abandoning a child whose future even the original story couldn’t foresee, she feared she would keep looking back despite having walked cleanly away from the Iols mansion.

The chestnut-colored hair slipping between her fingers felt soft and warm.

Sander, quietly watching the two grow visibly closer than yesterday, suddenly smiled gently toward the child and spoke.

“Was it Bil?”

At Sander’s call, Revil flinched slightly.

“This is Revil Iols—the child Feyron Iols brought from the orphanage, declaring him heir because he claimed my husband and I would never be able to see our own child.”

Erina answered for the boy, who seemed overwhelmed even by speaking directly to Sander.

Unable to hide a bitter chuckle at Erina’s reply, Sander said,

“His Majesty, who places blind trust in that man without rhyme or reason, ought to know this truth.”

“We’ll all know soon enough, at the Founding Day ceremony.”

Sander fell momentarily silent at Erina’s icy response, then stared intently at the child.

This boy from the orphanage bore an uncanny resemblance to ‘that child’ he had long missed.

But that child was surely dead.

Five years ago, he had seen the boy’s lifeless body with his own eyes.

The memory remained vivid, as fresh as if it happened just yesterday.

Yet Revil before him now possessed the exact same hue.

Hair the same shade as his own, and vivid crimson eyes—hated yet impossible to truly despise.

Revil looked exactly as that child would have, had he survived and grown up safely.

“How old are you?”

At Sander’s probing tone and relentless gaze, Erina tensed and pulled the child protectively toward her.

“My lord.”

Seeing Erina shield Revil from view, Sander’s expression hardened.

“So you intend to take the child out of House Iols.”

Erina felt his eyes asking whether she truly had to take such a difficult path.

She knew perfectly well how hard it would be to leave House Iols with this very child whom she had just publicly acknowledged as heir.

“Yes. But it’s not as difficult as you think.”

“Oh?”

“To officially recognize him as heir, Feyron would need my consent and the Emperor’s approval.”

It hadn’t even been a full week since Feyron brought Revil into the mansion.

Erina had not given her consent, nor had the Emperor granted approval.

Feyron had only told Erina privately that he intended to make the boy heir—but nothing had been formalized.

Thus, taking Revil out of the family posed no legal issue.

Officially, Revil was still just a child temporarily staying at the Iols mansion after being briefly brought from the orphanage.

“I understand.”

“I’m eight.”

As soon as Sander replied, Revil spoke in a tiny voice.

Sander’s eyes widened as he looked at the boy.

Meeting Revil’s fearful gaze fixed firmly on him from within Erina’s arms, Sander softened and smiled gently.

“I see.”

He wasn’t ‘that child.’ If the other boy had lived, he’d be seven now—but the child before him wasn’t him.

Yet despite knowing this, Sander couldn’t stop his eyes from drifting back to Revil.

Suddenly, the carriage halted.

Following a knock, the door opened, and a woman climbed aboard.

“My lord?”

As Erina called out in surprise to Sander, the woman who had entered gave a breezy smile and introduced herself.

“A pleasure to meet you, my lady. I am Heila Ventel.”

Her sky-blue bob was as refreshing as her smile, and her crimson eyes sparkled brightly with curiosity.

“I thought sending one of my knights directly to a non-vassal house might raise suspicion, so I arranged for a knight to serve you as a lady’s maid.”

“A knight serving as a maid? Lady Ventel herself?”

Surprised by Sander’s explanation, Erina asked.

Heila Ventel was someone Erina already knew.

Though not famous, as the eldest daughter of House Ventel—whose domain lay close to the capital—she was well-known among those active in high society.

Erina was startled first by the word ‘maid,’ then even more so by ‘knight.’

“Were you a knight, my lady?”

“Indeed, though normally part of the Marquis’s hidden forces, as of today I am both your knight and your lady’s maid.”

Taken aback by Heila’s cheerful declaration, Erina stammered.

“But…”

She was only a Countess.

Even if a Countess took on a lady’s maid, it would typically be the second or third daughter of a Baron’s house at most.

Though no strict rule existed, it was extremely rare for someone from a nearly equal-ranked house to serve as a maid.

Moreover, as the eldest daughter of a Viscount’s family based in the capital, Heila could easily have become a maid to a Duke’s household or even a princess.

Yet here she was—not only offering to serve as a maid, but also claiming to be a knight.

“Didn’t I promise to protect you?”

It was Heila, not Erina, who looked startled at Sander’s tender tone and warm gaze.

Erina had many things she wished to say, yet found herself hesitating, unable to speak.

“To swiftly receive updates on the magic stone mine and flexibly handle emergencies, Heila is absolutely essential.”

He was right.

A lady’s maid was less a member of the family and more an employee—thus enjoying greater freedom of movement.

She would be someone neither Dowager Countess Iols nor Lady Ashila could easily command, and Feyron could not force her to obey.

Heila Ventel wasn’t merely suitable to guard Erina—she was perfect.

After some deliberation, Erina finally nodded in agreement.

“Yes, I understand.”

“A pleasure to serve you, Countess.”

“Please call me Erina.”

By the time their greetings concluded, the carriage had already arrived near the Iols Count’s residence.

It stopped not right in front of the mansion, but a short distance away.

“Since I’m not exactly on cordial terms with Feyron Iols, it seemed unwise to have the Kerennic Marquis’s carriage enter the estate directly, so I halted nearby.”

“I appreciate your consideration, my lord.”

The carriage door opened, and Heila, Erina, and Revil stepped down one after another.

Sander, half-risen while holding the door, watched Erina bow in farewell, then smiled enchantingly with eyes gently crinkled.

“Next time we meet, might you call me Sander as well?”

“Excuse me?”

“We are rather close now, wouldn’t you say?”

Realizing his teasing smile was meant to provoke her, Erina pouted in reply.

“I’ll think about it.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

After Sander closed the carriage door and departed, Revil stood on Erina’s left, holding her hand, while Heila stood on her right as they walked together.

Under the bright sunlight, Heila unfurled a parasol—taken from somewhere—and cast a shadow over Erina.

Their cheerful mood on this fine day lasted only a brief moment.

“Are you insane?”

These were the first words Erina heard from Feyron as soon as she entered the mansion.

Sighing deeply, Erina couldn’t understand why Feyron was so furiously agitated.

“You’re leaving the mansion? And taking my heir with you!”

The moment she stepped inside, the massive chandelier overhead made Feyron’s silver hair gleam offensively bright with his anger.

“Only someone out of their mind would do something like this.”

“Didn’t you hear?”

“What?”

Meeting Feyron’s utterly bewildered expression, Erina felt utterly speechless.

He genuinely had no idea.

When a noblewoman left using the family carriage, it was impossible for the steward or head maid not to know.

Not only would they know—it was standard procedure for them to immediately report it to the family head.

Yet Feyron remained unaware, which could only mean someone had deliberately intercepted that report.

Whether that someone was a loyal steward, the head maid, or someone else wielding real influence within the estate—she couldn’t say.

“Yesterday, I took the family carriage to a village on the outskirts of the Iols County.”

Feyron’s face went rigid at Erina’s words.

He had never heard that Erina had gone out.

“But do you know what’s even more amusing?”

Erina, who always kept her eyes demurely lowered before Feyron, now lifted them fully and mocked him openly.

“The coachman said he’d return shortly—but never came back!”

Feyron gasped so sharply he stopped breathing at her words.

The family carriage that had taken the noblewoman out had returned—without her.

This had once been a common practice among noble houses.

If a noblewoman’s carriage returned without her, it silently signaled she had been cast out of the household.

Though legally still the lady of the house, she would instantly lose all her rights and become the talk of high society overnight.

The dishonor was meant to be so unbearable that she would leave the family of her own accord.

What had happened to Erina was anything but trivial.

Both Sander and Heila had inwardly cursed Feyron twice over upon hearing what she’d endured.

“That… that…”

“Did you give your permission?”

“Of course not!”

Feyron blurted out in panic, then abruptly clamped his lips shut, startled by his own outburst.

“Then who on earth did it?”

Following Erina’s gaze, someone secretly watching them from afar came into view.

“You see, Feyron—I only went out for some fresh air to a tiny village. Just a handful of households, really. So small it didn’t even have a name.”

Erina’s voice was calm and gentle, as if reciting a fairy tale to a child—yet her demeanor was eerily composed given the tension in the air.

“As evening fell, the carriage never came.”

Slowly tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear, Erina addressed the figure stealthily peeking their way like a thief.

“Do you, by any chance, know why the carriage never arrived?”

Erina’s eyes, fixed past Feyron, landed on the person secretly observing them.

“Lady Ashila.”

As Erina’s gaze shifted behind Feyron, everyone else’s eyes followed.
