Beneath the moonlight, standing against the ancient castle wall, Edan’s black cloak fluttered as he stared down at me with icy, narrowed eyes. I’d forgotten—thanks to his consistently harmless behavior—but now, in an instant, I was jolted back to reality. This impossibly beautiful man before me was, without a doubt, the villain.
“Latieana.”
For the first time, he spoke my name—in a flat, monotone voice.
“You were going to ask, weren’t you?”
He emphasized his words again, forcefully.
Perhaps I should consider myself lucky—he was smiling, ever so slightly.
“Where were you going?”
Instead of answering, I shifted my gaze to the object clutched in Edan’s left hand.
My eyes naturally drifted toward it. A long, gleaming silver blade, stained with fresh, vivid red blood—
blood that looked as if it had just been spilled moments ago.
From head to toe, goosebumps erupted across my skin, and my heart began pounding rapidly.
‘What on earth have you been doing every night in the library?’
I released my grip on the stone I’d been clutching.
“That’s… this is… oh, it’s a misunderstanding!”
Edan didn’t even blink as he replied.
“What misunderstanding?”
“I… I was just… stretching under the bright moonlight. Doing some nighttime calisthenics…”
“Making excuses, huh?”
I expected him to get angry, but instead, his smile softened slightly as he cut me off.
My fingertips grew clammy with sweat, so I tightened my grip on my bag strap.
“I know what you were trying to do.”
“Huh?”
“You must’ve been really angry that I didn’t accept your resignation. To think you’d try to leave like this.”
He hit the nail on the head—as if he’d crawled inside my head and read my thoughts.
But I shook my head vigorously, as if to insist such an idea had never even crossed my mind in my wildest dreams.
“No, really, I—”
“It’s fine.”
Edan cut me off again, and his next words made my eyes widen in shock.
“You can run away.”
Did I hear that right? Since when was “running away” such a hopeful phrase?
I finally detached myself completely from the castle wall, where I’d been awkwardly clinging with my legs pressed together.
“R-really?”
In that moment, I didn’t even realize how foolish my question sounded.
By asking that, I’d just openly admitted I’d been trying to escape.
Edan smiled benevolently at my hopeful, sparkling eyes—as if encouraging me to go ahead.
“As much as you want.”
I’m saved! The man who looked like the Grim Reaper moments ago now suddenly resembled an angel. His smooth lips looked especially beautiful tonight. It’s almost a little sad to think I’ll never see this face again once I leave. But goodbye. I really want to live.
“Thank you! Then, goodbye!”
I bowed deeply enough for my long hair to brush the floor, clutched my bag tightly, and turned around to leave. Just as I took a determined step forward, Edan’s low voice followed me.
“But if you’re caught, you die.”

This time, I genuinely felt broken. I barely managed to twist my body back toward him. Edan was tilting his head slightly, fingers resting lightly on his neck.
His eyelids slowly closed and reopened. By now, his smile had vanished, replaced by lethally cold, blood-red eyes brimming with killing intent.

My wandering gaze drifted back to his left hand.

I lifted my previously forward-placed foot and stepped back.

As I spoke, I swung my arms wildly in exaggerated circles.
Be shameless. To survive, just stubbornly deny everything.
Swallowing my shame, I flailed my arms chaotically, stretched my waist front, back, left, right, and even demonstrated bending and straightening my knees.
Edan, who’d been silently watching me, seemed to consider whether to believe my act, and asked again.
“You’re really not going?”
“Nope.”
“Lacking courage, huh?”

Before I could even recover from the dizzying spin of my vision, Edan began moving quickly, and instinctively, I clutched tightly onto his cloak.
“I’d love to play with you longer, but I’m a bit pressed for time today.”
Terrified of falling, I clung to him desperately—and in mere moments, we stood before the library.
“Why here…?”
Through the crack of the open door, suspicious flickering lights glowed within the library.
Instantly, my grip on his cloak went limp.
This was the place Edan entered and exited every night. I’d deliberately tried not to pay attention, but those bloodstains he always carried—they came from in there. The blood staining this sword today… also originated from within.
I’d vaguely guessed that something unknown happened inside the library each night—but I never wanted to know, not now, not ever. I didn’t want to be curious. I didn’t want answers.

I gulped, the sound loud in my parched throat.

Without hesitation, Edan carried me straight into the portal.
“Ugh…!”
Blinded by the rushing light, I squeezed my eyes shut with all my strength.
Not long after, the wind suddenly changed.
From the warm, gentle breeze of the East—to a cold, dry winter gale.
When I opened my eyes, I stood in a place thick with darkness and fog.
Kwaang! Kwang! Loud noises and the stench of blood filled the air.
“Where is this…?”
Edan answered my bewildered mutter as he gently set me down on the ground.
“The Unbreakable Wall.”
Good heavens. The Unbreakable Wall marked the northern border at the edge of the Empire.
The Empire’s northern region was dominated by massive snowy mountain ranges—the first place demons typically invaded.
And along those mountains stood the very wall called the Unbreakable Wall—the place where I now stood.
A cold wind swept over my entire body, making me shiver violently. Edan casually yanked down a nearby flag and draped it over me.
The large flag covered me from head to knees. Edan pointed with his finger toward the other side of the wall.
“You see that?”
Following the direction of his finger, I momentarily stopped breathing.
Not far below the wall, enormous demons and soldiers were locked in fierce combat.
The demon, resembling a lizard at first glance, wielded a thick, long tail—each swing sent three or four soldiers flying into the air.
Watching soldiers tossed like ragdolls, I instinctively stepped backward in fear.
Then, for some reason, a sense of dissonance struck me, and I turned to look behind me.
“How is this even possible…?”
Unlike the horrific battle raging before the wall, the area behind it was a perfectly peaceful meadow.
Countless stars formed a glittering Milky Way overhead, and beneath the moonlight, a shimmering river flowed serenely through the vast grassland.
The moment I saw this starkly contrasting landscape divided by a single wall, I realized.

At that moment, frantic footsteps echoed as a knight sprinted up the stairs like a madman.
Covered in blood just like Edan had been last time, the knight spotted us and gasped for breath, sputtering incredulously.
“Your Grace! Where on earth did you disappear to mid-battle? Are you trying to get all our soldiers killed?!”
Edan clicked his tongue lightly.
“Ruben.”
“Yes! Go ahead, make some excuse!”
“I already told you—I had something important to do.”

The knight, clad in the same black cloak as Edan, bellowed furiously as he charged forward—then abruptly froze.

His pupils seemed to tremble in shock—then his eyes crinkled slightly.
