When revenge was fulfilled, Lowell should have died. It wasn’t merely because she needed to conclude her vengeance, but because Lowell herself had never once considered what life would be like after revenge ended—what she should do, how she should live, or even what she ought to become.

In the past, Lowell wouldn’t have hesitated to confide in René about her past, but the paths had already diverged. She decided not to reveal any more of herself to him.

It was, in a way, a line Lowell drew between herself and René.

Thus, a subtly cold current flowed between them—though, strictly speaking, it was largely one-sided on Lowell’s part. Consequently, René remained as gentle toward her as ever, and she faced no discomfort living at Martinek.
