Helen’s blade did not pierce Lowell deeply. The moment Helen lunged forward with her knife, Lowell instinctively jerked her body backward. Judged by the wound’s depth alone, it was hardly even a scratch—certainly not fatal. Yet even before Helen’s head hit the ground, Lowell realized something had been smeared onto the blade.

‘It’s not hemorrhaging. My senses feel strange. Could it be poison?’

Typical poisons used on such wounds either burned like fire or numbed the body into sluggish paralysis. This leaned closer to the latter—her limbs grew heavy, as if being dragged into slumber.

But could mere paralysis ever compare to the sensation of sinking into slumber? What pressed down on Lowell felt less like pain and more like comfort—a tranquil calm, as if closing her eyes now would grant her a deep, long-overdue sleep.

Those unfamiliar with death might well fear even this, but Lowell had crossed the threshold between life and death countless times. She knew instinctively this was no sensation of dying—and thus, what coated Helen’s dagger was certainly no poison.

There was only one possible conclusion.

‘René intervened.’

It wasn’t hard to deduce that the substance on the blade was the same drug she herself had taken recently at Klech’s tea party to deceive others. No one would bother smearing mere sleeping powder on a blade when the drowsiness hit this hard.

The problem was that this drug was virtually impossible for an ordinary person to obtain. Though occasionally used within the Martinek household, even Lowell had needed to ask René for it once she’d left Martinek behind.

Helen, clinging desperately to Monique alone while her family declined, could never have acquired such a thing. René must have been behind this—Lowell was certain.

She tried to alert Simoren, but the drowsiness overtook her first.

In the blink of an eye, everything had changed. ‘Anette Martinek’ was now officially dead to the outside world, and she had been brought back to Martinek—not by her own will, but entirely by René’s unilateral decision.

Thus, Lowell survived once again. Once again, she was trapped in life.

“I should’ve ended it all back then. I truly wanted to finish it this time… Why did you save me? Why…?”

Lowell buried her face in her hands and sobbed. René watched her silently for a long while before finally speaking.
