Arthur Van was indeed Joseph’s biological father, but it had been Cain who raised him.

It was Cain who had provided for Joseph’s mother financially, who had rescued her from that hellish place, who had given Joseph the Hastings name, and who had now secured his true paternal surname.

How would Cain feel if he heard this news?

He would probably smile and say it was for the best—but deep down, he’d be hurt.

Looking at the sleeping Joseph, Jane recalled Cedric’s proposal.

〈“The Reconstruction Committee insists Joseph must take the Van surname without question, but I think differently. Why not let the boy decide for himself, Jane? Joseph is as clever as you and Cain.”〉

Understanding this was the best Cedric could offer, Jane accepted his suggestion.
