Lady Maud stared at me intently.

“Why would you tell me that?”

“Well, because there’s a rumor circulating that you’re deeply involved in Barbarossa’s downfall.”

In truth, it wasn’t Barbarossa’s name that people dared not speak of in front of Lady Maud.

What people were really whispering about and curious to know was whether it was true that Lady Maud had sent a woman to ruin the life of the bastard child her husband had brought home.

“Barbarossa, being Sir Percival’s bastard, had one condition attached to his entry into the knighthood: ‘You must never marry for your entire life.'”

It was the upper class’s contempt—allow him to join, but forbid him from passing on that tainted bloodline.

“But Barbarossa, having agreed to that condition, didn’t exactly live a spotless life after joining. He knew that although the Order demanded chastity and purity, they still turned a blind eye to moderate indulgences.”

Indeed, that was the case. Until a pregnant woman appeared before Barbarossa claiming to carry his child, everyone merely frowned but never made it a serious issue.

“Barbarossa, who prided himself on keeping his lower half well under control, was utterly flustered then. After all, casually enjoying some pleasures was entirely different from having a woman prove his indiscretion with a pregnancy right before the knights.”

Lady Maud listened in silence. There wasn’t the slightest trace of disturbance in her eyes.

“With his initiation ceremony just around the corner, Barbarossa must have felt as if the sky was collapsing. What about the expectations of the parents who gave him, a bastard, this chance and pushed him this far—that is, you and Sir Percival? And above all, he thought his life, finally free from humiliation and on the verge of success, was unfolding before his eyes. Oh dear, only to plummet from here to there!”

I paused briefly to steady my breath, preparing for the twist to come.

“Yet surprisingly, Barbarossa—who had grown up being called a fatherless brat—decided to abandon his bright future and marry the woman to take responsibility for her. The woman was deeply moved.”
