Barbarossa recounted the past with deadened eyes.

“He raged that I’d ruined with my own hands the only chance he’d ever given me to earn his recognition. He beat me, and I just took it. Back then, even that paltry acknowledgment from him mattered so much.”

Barbarossa drained his wine glass completely.

“Just as everything hit rock bottom, my lover called for me. Ah, I realized then—this couldn’t go on. If things had continued as they were, I’d have made all sorts of excuses: ‘Just give her some money and be done with it; what matters is that I become a knight.’ I’d have claimed, ‘It’s not that I won’t take responsibility for you,’ and spun lies like that. But my lover struck first.”

The orange juice I’d set aside earlier suddenly pulled at me again, intensely.

“Did you figure it out right there?”

Barbarossa burst into loud, self-mocking laughter.

“Furious, I stormed off to Lady Maud and declared, ‘Even if you pull such filthy tricks, I’ll absolutely become a knight—so keep your eyes wide open and watch!’”

That was precisely what Lady Maud had wanted.

“But the moment I left the main house, my dear half-brother punched me square in the face. He shouted, ‘How dare you say such things without understanding what our mother went through to take all the blame upon herself!’ He resembles our stepmother—but no, he’s actually more emotional and human than she ever was. Anyway, he’s usually so calm; that was the first time I’d ever seen him that angry.”
