The Plan of the Terminally-Ill Wife's Divorce (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“Oh dear, Miss Kaitlyn, please calm down. We’ve told Miss Anette many times that you have plenty of fine clothes, so she should just wear yours. But Miss Anette insisted she liked your outfit and coveted it—what else could we do?”
The governess’s lies flowed out effortlessly.
Now that the obligatory dinner with the Grand Duke was over, the governess had nothing left to fear. She boldly lied straight to Kaitlyn, the household’s true power.
“Governess, no matter how stubborn my sister is, you’ve worked in this mansion longer than just a day or two, have you?”
“That’s right—Miss Anette’s insolent behavior is entirely my fault.”
While the two like-minded women played their little duet, I changed into my nightgown.
Flap—the thin muslin chemise fluttered from my hand.
You want it back? If you want it, go ahead.
Riiip.
With an unpleasant tearing sound, Kaitlyn’s muslin chemise split cleanly into two pieces.
“Kyaaaah! What on earth are you doing? That’s my dress!”
“You told me to take it off right away, didn’t you? So I took it off for you. How I remove my clothes is my choice.”
“Whose clothes were those for you to tear up like that? Are you insane?”
“Oh, so I damaged your borrowed garment. Fine—I’ll pay for it. That settles it, doesn’t it?”
“You—you!”
“Weren’t you going to burn it anyway?”
“What did you say?”
“You always throw away anything I’ve touched because it disgusts you. I assumed this would be no different, so I took care of it first. Was I wrong to act?”
Kaitlyn turned deathly pale, gasping for breath as if she might collapse at any moment. This was the first time Anette, who had spent so long cowed and silent, had ever retaliated so boldly against her.
“I’ve been rereading my old diary lately—it’s full of amusing entries. Turns out you ‘borrowed’ quite a few things from me when we were children.”
“M-my diary?”
“That muslin chemise was nothing. If you were going to borrow something, you might as well have taken something better—but your maids, afraid of your temper, brought me the oldest, most worn-out one they could find.”
Had I not been in danger of missing dinner with the Grand Duke, I wouldn’t have worn that muslin chemise just now.
Therefore, tearing it up wasn’t a waste. I was merely returning an old garment to nature.
“I’ll gladly pay for that old muslin dress, dear sister. But in return, I must reclaim all the valuables you’ve borrowed and never returned.”
〈Sister, this tiara is so pretty. Can I try it on just for a moment?〉
〈Big sister, can I borrow some allowance? You’ve saved up so much since you were little.〉
〈Sister, there’s a tea gathering tomorrow at Marlin Count’s estate, and I’d love to wear your headdress—the one Grandmother left you. I don’t have anything like that, you know?〉
〈Come on, lend me your little brother. He’s not even a stranger—he’s my brother! Are you really that stingy?〉
Memories of Anette’s past torment and my own previous life’s suffering at the hands of my new family flashed through my mind. Though I inhabited a borrowed body, this situation felt all too familiar.
People who only claimed kinship when it suited them—worse than strangers.
Stepsiblings who, despite being closest to me, treated me as if I were a motherless orphan.
Strangers would’ve been kinder.
It wasn’t just a child’s toy she’d taken—it was nothing to dismiss. As the eldest daughter of House Fosse, every item Anette originally owned was precious and expensive. Kaitlyn—and the servants—had slowly stripped them away, piece by piece.
‘I’m not the original Anette, who stayed silent and endured everything.’
“Perfect timing. Those pearl earrings you’re wearing right now—they were originally mine, weren’t they? You snatched them from me on the day you first came to our house, claiming it was a keepsake for becoming sisters. I’ll take those back first.”
Kaitlyn instinctively clapped her hands over her ears. The white pearl earrings dangled from her earlobes—treasured heirlooms gifted by a former queen to House Fosse.
“What nonsense is this all of a sudden? Are you really picking a fight over a single muslin dress? In a marquisate like ours?”
“You were the one who started this over that muslin dress.”
My icy words made Kaitlyn’s face flush crimson.
A muslin chemise and pearl earrings—Kaitlyn surely realized now she’d picked the wrong fight with me.
“I won’t nitpick over trifles. But you know as well as I do that those pearl earrings are rare treasures.”
Ignoring Kaitlyn’s flustered state, I continued firmly.
“Besides the pearl earrings, there’s also the emerald bracelet you borrowed—and my mare that your younger brother Simmons took. And then there’s…”
As I listed more items, Kaitlyn’s face grew paler. She hadn’t expected me to remember every single thing.
Her panicked expression seemed to scream, ‘Was this girl, who always kept her head down and said nothing whenever something was taken, secretly keeping count all along?’
Anette had always been the pushover half-sister—someone to trample and kick without consequence. Now, seeing her stand tall and demand answers so sharply left Kaitlyn utterly bewildered.
Cornered, Kaitlyn chose to lash out in anger instead.
“Just because you’re marrying into a ducal house, do you think you’re somebody now? You’re being sent off to the freezing North, where you’d barely survive winter without our family’s help!”
“What?”
Trending
“Your title may be two ranks higher, but your pitiful ducal house still needs our support to survive. Do you even have enough food in that frozen wasteland—ah!”
Slap.
Kaitlyn’s head snapped sideways—struck by my hand.
“Apologize.”
Anette hit me? That wretched girl slapped my cheek?
Kaitlyn stared at me in disbelief.
A gently raised young lady of a marquisate had never been slapped in her entire life.
But I had no patience left for foolish side characters who insulted the male lead.
“Apologize. Now.”
“What do you think you’re doing!”
“What you said to me—that’s family business. But you just insulted the North, where I’m to be married. That, above all else, I cannot forgive.”
“What did I say that was wrong! Aaah! Let go!”
Wrong. Insulting the novel’s protagonist is unforgivable.
This world revolves around the main character, you idiot.
“I won’t let go until you apologize for what you said.”
I spoke in a voice sharp as steel. Terrified, Kaitlyn could only sputter incoherently. Even the maids, who should have intervened, stood frozen in shock at the sudden turn of events.
Kaitlyn and I tumbled together in a tangle of limbs.
Thud. Thud. Footsteps approached.
“It seems Miss Anette’s famed generosity doesn’t extend to her own sister.”
In an instant, a powerful force pulled us apart.
“Aaah!”
Startled by the sudden strength, Kaitlyn stumbled backward, tripped over her own feet, and tumbled to the floor.
I, however, landed safely in someone’s arms.
“Your Grace?”
My mouth fell open. The silver mask hiding his face, that grating voice—it was unmistakably him. But why was he here?
‘You said you wouldn’t come!’
“I sincerely apologize for entering a lady’s chamber without permission, regardless of the reason.”
He bowed gracefully.
“But even within your own home, it’s unwise to fight behind closed doors. Otherwise, crowds gather, as you see.”
“Looks like you suddenly found some free time.”
I glanced helplessly between the wide-open door and the Grand Duke. Now that my anger had cooled, I wondered if my reaction toward Kaitlyn had been too extreme.
‘If I’d known the Grand Duke was coming, I wouldn’t have grabbed Kaitlyn’s hair like that… Wait, but wouldn’t he still see the one doing the hitting as being on his side?’
If I were a proper romance heroine, I’d have rebuked her elegantly with words—but as a short-lived extra, my temper got the better of me, and my body moved before my mind could catch up.
“I was walking without purpose and somehow ended up here.”
His voice rumbled softly in my ear. Even distorted, it sounded oddly gentle.
Apparently, the Grand Duke preferred wilder women than he let on. Good to know.
“It seems I’ve been thinking about you far more deeply than I realized, Miss Anette.”
“Then shall I prepare some tea?”
Ignoring Kaitlyn, who was still sobbing on the floor, I asked brazenly.
“I’d love to, but I see I’m not the only guest here today.”
Unfortunately, the Duke wasn’t as shamelessly carefree as I was—he couldn’t enjoy a leisurely cup of tea with his weeping sister in the background.
“If you’d be so kind as to spare me some of your precious time, I’ll return at a proper appointed hour.”
“Yes, of course!”
I nodded eagerly.
“Miss Anette…”
For a moment, the Grand Duke hesitated, as if about to say something about me. What? That I was composed? That I was remarkably charming despite just meeting him? Bold? Why stop mid-sentence—now I’m curious!
‘What is it, Your Grace?’
“By the way, Lady Kaitlyn.”
“Yes?”
Instead of commenting on me, he called out to Kaitlyn, who was sniffling in the corner.

“The North is cold. Thus, we lack the lavish cuisine of the South. But remember this—the peace you enjoy here exists only because we guard the northern frontier.”
His tone was icy, sharp as frost. Kaitlyn shivered visibly.
“I… I…”
‘He heard.’
Kaitlyn, who had just managed to stand with Sir Daniel’s support, collapsed back down, utterly deflated.
“And Miss Anette—the North does not accept apologies through force.”
He whispered so softly only I could hear.
Without the silver mask, his tone might have sounded like a friendly jest.
Kaitlyn couldn’t even meet the Grand Duke’s eyes as he left the room. With her head bowed, strands of the red hair I’d torn out earlier drifted one by one onto her knees.
