“What do you think I felt when I narrowly missed you in the forest last time? That heart-stopping moment still won’t leave my mind.”

I had sworn never to let her slip away again, yet she kept darting out of Darius’s protection as if mocking that very vow.

More than the shock of learning that Lady Ygritte, whom he had trusted, was a traitor—or even the relief of having resolved a major problem in the castle—Darius felt as if his heart was crumbling from my reckless actions.

‘When Darius failed to catch me in the Ashwood Forest.’

His expression then had been utterly devastated, as if the world itself had collapsed. Thud. Just recalling that look sent a sharp pang through my own chest.

‘Don’t misunderstand. That pained expression was only because of Rose, whom he’d grown up with since childhood.’

He was merely scolding me with the same worried look he’d show for another woman. No—he had to be.

‘Remember the original story. Darius belongs to Evangeline Stockwork.’

“You saw for yourself that I have a spirit. If Your Grace hadn’t come, I would’ve handled it with my spirit.”

That wasn’t it at all. I knew full well his words came from worry and concern for me.

Yet it still hurt. Couldn’t he have praised me instead of scolding me? After all, I’d just narrowly escaped death! Couldn’t he comfort me with kinder words?

“I don’t understand what I did wrong. Although the investigation will reveal more later, Lady Ygritte has clearly been behind countless serious incidents until now.”

“Even so, you could’ve at least said a word to me.”

“No, but won’t this happen again next time too?”

Darius looked at me as if he couldn’t believe his ears.
