Kite heard Balder’s subordinate snap in irritation, and moments later, without any warning, the carriage door swung open abruptly.

Kite, who had been closing his eyes, looked coldly at the subordinate.

“You truly are a rude lot. Who do you think I am in your eyes?”

“Yes, yes. Your Grace, Duke Perimontra. I know full well you are a person of high standing. But my duty comes first. Who is that lying there?”

“My niece.”

Kite pulled down slightly the cloak that had covered Ruela’s head all the way, revealing her back with the wig on.

“Why is she lying down? Is she unwell or something?”

“Yes. She has a fever and a bad cough—I’m taking her to see a physician.”

“But why do you travel together like this every day? I’m curious—what reason could there be for accompanying her even to the physician?”

“I thought I’d look around a bit while I’m out. What of it? Is that not allowed?”

“Well, if that’s your reason, I’ve nothing more to say—but do you truly not know anything about Ruela Romnin’s whereabouts?”

Kite glared fiercely at Balder’s subordinate.

“You know I wasn’t at the mansion when that incident occurred, don’t you? If I’d been present, do you really think I’d have let your master barge in so brazenly and left him unchallenged?”

“But it was Ruela Romnin who broke the promise! She came saying she’d meet him, then ran off—so our master is furious.”
