Ruela, who had been smiling along with Zennon’s bright grin, suddenly remembered something she’d heard that afternoon and asked.
“Zennon, I heard the people here receive food rations—is that true?”
“Rations?”
“What does ‘rations’ even mean?”
Raphael, Mitchell, and Hazen looked at Ruela with surprised expressions. Zennon, who had been swinging his arm—now perfectly healed after applying the medicine—glanced around at their astonished faces and spoke.
“A few years ago, a severe famine struck, depleting our stored grain reserves, and recently several key granary regions fell under monster control, causing harvests to plummet drastically. As a result, the food shortage became so dire that everything except bread and vegetables was placed under a rationing system.”
“Are the rations being distributed properly?”
At Ruela’s question, Zennon shook his head.
“Since distribution prioritizes higher social classes, it’s been a long time since the lowest class—the commoners—have received their fair share.”
Just as expected. After hearing even nobles receive rations, she’d assumed ordinary citizens must be suffering far worse—and now she’d received the answer she anticipated.
Ruela asked carefully, her expression filled with concern.
“Are you and your family doing all right?”
Zennon hesitated briefly before replying.
“We can still buy bread, so we’re fine.”
Ruela gazed quietly at Zennon.
