The Only Healer, Ruela (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 16
‘Information Bulletin Board?’
Her body, which had been leaning comfortably against the sofa backrest, straightened up. Completing the ‘Information Notice Board’ quest had created an information bulletin board.
Ruela stared at the wooden bulletin board floating across her entire screen. It matched the one she’d seen earlier in the plaza. Judging by the portrait of herself pinned to it, the content probably synced with the plaza notice board.
This strange phenomenon was utterly incomprehensible. But since it worked in her favor, was there really any need to question it? She quickly stopped thinking about it and clicked the number at the bottom of the board to move to the next page.
“Ah!”
“What’s gotten into you since earlier?”
It was only natural for him to be curious, seeing her move her hands through empty air.
“Just a moment. I’ll explain everything shortly.”
The next page of the main screen resembled the typical talk or information-sharing boards commonly found on gaming platforms.
Did you see the announcement? The next expansion pack is the final one.
Does it even make sense to leave the ending story up to players? They’re just being lazy and using a dragon as an excuse.
Still, the boss update that’ll determine the next storyline is exciting.
Having read that far, Ruela quickly clicked the topmost announcement.
Helane July 30 Major Update: ‘The Secret of Duke Kuran’
The final update for the seventh expansion pack, ‘Helane’s Counterattack: Ruela’s Story,’ will be released on July 30.
As the last update before the next expansion, the final named boss—Duke Kuran, the Ruler of Darkness—will appear.
This raid has no participant limit; the fewer players who join, the greater the rewards.
Players who successfully defeat Duke Kuran will receive a special reward: a one-level-up bonus.
The final boss battle will feature the highest difficulty level.
During this boss fight, your allied NPC main healer, ‘Ruela Romnin,’ will accompany you. The storyline of the upcoming final expansion pack will be determined by the strategy used by the first team worldwide and across all servers to achieve the first kill.
However, if the NPC accompanying the first-kill party dies, they will not appear in the next expansion pack.
If you wish to see Ruela Romnin again in the next expansion, please ensure she survives.
We wish all brave heroes the best of luck.
-Helane Development Team-
“Damn it.”
It was a perfectly scripted plot.
Ruela was an NPC in Helane.
Since the game screen and reality were clearly linked, according to this announcement, she could die depending on how the players who landed the first kill on Duke Kuran chose to play.
She’d only feared Balder as an enemy—but something far worse was waiting for her.
Ruela glared at the game screen with eyes full of betrayal.
“What on earth is going on?”
Kite couldn’t bear her endless silence any longer and finally broke it with a question.
“I might die.”
“Weren’t you just talking about that?”
“Not about Guild Master Balder—about Duke Kuran. Or rather, because of this damn game system.”
“I told you I didn’t know the ending.”
“I just found out.”
“How?”
“I remembered the plot.”
Kite wanted to ask more, but Ruela’s expression was so grim he decided against saying anything further.
Ruela scrolled through the bulletin board again.
Players were still passionately discussing the announcement.
I’m a healer, so I’ll definitely keep Ruela alive.
Hey, does that mean parties without healers can’t possibly save Ruela?
Don’t get ahead of yourselves. It’ll be decided by whichever raid team gets the first clear anyway. Even if you want to save her, she might still die in the chaos.
I’m jealous. Getting to decide the next expansion’s content—it almost feels like being a Helane game developer.
At that point, it suddenly dawned on her.
First kill—that’s it.
She was both a player and the NPC Ruela Romnin. If she succeeded in defeating Duke Kuran without dying, she could live happily forever in the next expansion.
It suddenly clicked.
Trending
She needed to find a raid team. But where?
Ruela looked at Kite.
He was observing her with eyes full of curiosity.
Whoever could summon her soul—surely at least one person, Senhui, must be highly capable. And if these people had such a capable ally on their side, they themselves must be quite skilled too.
Ruela composed her expression and casually returned to their earlier conversation as if nothing had happened.
“Please explain about the port opening. Why did Kuran suddenly make that decision?”
“It seems they realized they couldn’t develop further without opening up. They’re falling behind other nations in many aspects.”
“The downtown area seemed very well-organized though. I’m not sure exactly what kind of gap you mean—I didn’t feel culturally backward at all, considering the cafes, theaters, and various shops.”
As she asked, Ruela wondered how to inquire about Kite’s companions, who were prospective guild members.
“That downtown was built during Helane’s era. There’s been no development whatsoever since then—not even a speck.”
“How long has the Kingdom of Kuran existed?”
“Fifteen years.”
Ruela’s eyes widened in surprise.
“That’s quite a while.”
“That’s why we must reclaim the Kuran territories before it gets any worse.”
Reclaim the Kuran territories? So that was his true goal all along.
Hearing Kite’s words, Ruela suddenly wondered why this man carried such a strong sense of duty.
“Who exactly are you?”
Kite frowned as if puzzled by her question.
“Me? I thought I already told you—I’m the guild master of the guild you’re going to join.”
“Don’t hide behind a guild you haven’t even formed yet. Be honest. Of the two you mentioned earlier—Elab and Helane—you must be from Helane.”
Kite’s expression hardened.
“Why do you think that?”
“You said you’d ‘reclaim’ them—the Kuran territories separated from Helane.”
Kite was genuinely astonished.
“You made that deduction just from that?”
“I have an even clearer reason.”
“What is it?”
“When we first entered this mansion earlier, Hazen said, ‘Welcome to Helane.’”
Kite, who had been waiting for Ruela’s answer with interest, gritted his teeth and spat out his friend’s name.
“Hazen….”
His lip movements clearly showed he was cursing his friend.
“We’re fated to be together, so tell me everything honestly. Why are you the only person who can form a guild in this closed-off country?”
Kite crossed his legs and looked at the woman sitting before him. He’d heard things about Ruela Romnin, but knew nothing about the other soul within her. Could he trust her?
After a brief moment of hesitation, Kite answered.
“Because I hold a status that can’t be ignored.”
“What kind of status?”
“Duke Perimontra of Elab.”
Ruela shook her head as if she didn’t believe him.
“But Hazen welcomed you to Helane, right? Tell me your true identity.”
Kite stared silently at Ruela for a moment, then spoke honestly.
“I am Kite Helane Leor, the crown prince of Helane and Grand Duke of the Leor Duchy.”
He wondered how she’d react—but her response took him by surprise.
“So you disguised yourself as Duke of Elab. If they found out the crown prince of their enemy nation was here, they’d come straight for your head.”
He couldn’t help but laugh. He’d expected Ruela Romnin’s attitude to change once she learned who he really was.
Well, that might’ve been true of the previous Ruela—who used to meddle with everyone. But the person inside Ruela Romnin now was different.
Kite answered Ruela’s question in a much gentler tone than before.
“That’s right.”
But after answering, he felt oddly puzzled. Could it be that, being from another world, she didn’t grasp just how significant the crown prince of Helane truly was?
“Do you understand how extraordinary my status is?”
ads
“Of course I do. I know that much.”
“Then why aren’t you surprised?”
“Should I be? What does it matter to me if someone who isn’t even my family holds a high status…?”
Ruela tilted her head, then suddenly clapped her hands.
“Oh! So you really are the perfect guild master for the guild I’m joining. But inheriting two nations—so which country are you really from?”
“The Elab Empire, where Leor is located. Helane is my mother’s homeland. My uncle passed away in an accident without leaving an heir, so I inherited it.”
“Even if you’re not Helane’s heir, being the Empire’s First Duke is an incredibly high status. Is it really okay for you to be here? Wait—then who exactly is ‘Perose’?”
The title of Duke Perimontra had previously belonged to the Elab Emperor, who was his younger sister’s husband.
Though he’d temporarily borrowed this title to conceal his identity, the position of the Empire’s First Duke was prestigious enough to rival the king of a small kingdom like Kuran. Yet instead of showing surprise, Ruela Romnin was already worrying about practical matters.
Kite gave a reassuring smile, his eyes crinkling slightly.
“Officially, I’m here to conduct trade. Perose is my maternal grandmother’s family name. Now that they’ve decided to open up, they won’t want to antagonize Elab, so for now, they’ll treat me as an honored guest.”
“Why only ‘for now’?”
“Because once they learn Ruela Romnin is in my guild, their hospitality will turn to hostility.”
“There’s no need to reveal I’m a guild member.”
“I have to submit the guild member list periodically.”
Thinking this place was just like a true dictatorship, Ruela offered generously.
“Then leave my name off the list. I’ll stay on as an honorary guild member.”
“That’s not possible. You need to be officially registered as a guild member to receive protection in all matters.”
