Delia’s mind flashed back through the tense moments she’d endured until now.

She had scoured day and night for any sign of the Imperial Soldiers’ movements, preparing for a surprise attack.

There had been no time for warm meals, since they couldn’t afford to light a fire and cook food.

She hadn’t been able to sleep properly either, forced to move silently through the night without making a sound.

And now, of all times, she found herself resting only after being captured by the enemy’s supreme commander.

Faced with such bitter irony, Delia could do nothing but let out a hollow laugh.

“Commander, please stop this and let’s march on.”

Surely, discipline would be lax during movement.

Marching might actually give her a better chance to escape.

If that proved impossible, it would still be better to get closer to the royal capital and find a way to call for help.

No matter how she thought about it, moving seemed the better option—but that iron-willed commander refused to budge an inch.

“Just wait. Once I uncover who you really are, I’ll march even if you tell me not to.”

“Even if you find out who I am, it won’t help you much.”

“You came here with only a small elite force for a surprise attack, yet because of someone—namely you—we ended up in a full-scale battle. Now I’m in a situation where I might even need the help of a prisoner trying to escape.”

“I’m just a regular prisoner. I have no power whatsoever.”

“Who knows? Maybe your parents are the gatekeepers of Iorenti’s royal palace?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Even if they were gatekeepers, would they really sell out their nation for one daughter?”

“I’ll handle the negotiations myself—just reveal your identity.”

“I won’t let that happen. Do I look like a fool? Sit quietly and let myself be used? No matter what, I will escape.”

Delia’s lark-like voice echoed through the mountains, mingling with the gentle babble of the brook.

Aaron gazed at the small stream before him, savoring the beautiful sounds of the forest.

He stood straddling the brook, looking straight at Delia.

“You can talk to me directly like this? Escape plans should be made quietly and secretly.”

“Why hide? I’ll leave openly—right before your very eyes, Commander.”

“You’ve got big dreams. Do you really think I’d let go of someone I went to so much trouble to capture?”

“I’ll create a situation where you can’t possibly hold me, whether you want to or not.”

Aaron looked at the prisoner being dragged along with her wrist firmly gripped in his hand.

She hadn’t even taken a single bite, yet how endlessly she chattered!

“Prisoner, I’m not so foolish as to let go of what’s mine.”

“You’ll be foolish soon enough.”

“Then you admit you’re mine?”

Aaron chuckled softly and pulled Delia’s wrist toward him.

Then he wrapped both arms around her from behind and carried her across the stream.

“Oh! Commander, what are you doing?”

Delia squirmed as she was suddenly pulled into his embrace.

His strong arms squeezing her tight made her chest feel constricted.

“Prisoner, stay still. If you keep wriggling, you’ll fall right into the stream.”

Only then did Delia look down at the water beneath her feet and stop struggling.

The sensation of floating in midair, and the cool current flowing under her feet.

Delia suddenly felt a chill run down her spine and instinctively leaned against Aaron without realizing it.

Aaron effortlessly lifted her soft body pressing into him.

His broad strides crossing the stream felt refreshingly light.

“I suppose I’ll have to go hunting tomorrow.”

Startled by his abrupt remark, Delia looked up at Aaron.

A faint smile lingered on his lips, yet his eyes gleamed with sharp intensity.

“Why suddenly?”

“You’re far too light. I need to feed you and help you gain some weight. That’s the only way you’ll recover quickly.”

Delia frowned deeply at Aaron’s absurd comment.

“Stop that nonsense and just march already. Isn’t your army stationed near the capital?”

“Why? Is there someone in the royal palace you’re eager to see?”

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Huh. Delia quickly clamped her mouth shut.

An abrupt silence settled between them.

The sound of flowing water, rustling leaves in the wind, and startled birds flapping their wings away.

The fresh, serene sounds of the forest filled the quiet space between them.

Everything except Delia felt at peace.

“Do you have family in Iorenti’s capital?”

Delia kept her lips tightly shut even at Aaron’s question, reminding herself of their relationship.

The man who held her captive was the supreme commander of Stilietz, the very nation that invaded Iorenti.

And she was Iorenti’s princess, now his prisoner.

It would be disastrous if this inscrutable enemy commander discovered her true identity.

If that mad commander found out the truth, he’d exploit her down to the bone.

Her father might even recklessly stamp the royal seal anywhere just to rescue her.

Neither outcome was desirable.

Delia shook her head vigorously to dispel the ominous feeling.

“You’ll find out eventually anyway. Why not tell me now?”

Aaron lowered his head toward Delia, who was shaking hers firmly in his arms.

“What is your true identity, Prisoner?”

His voice, low and soft enough to make goosebumps rise, slipped into Delia’s ear.

“There’s nothing for you to know.”

“I’m far too curious. I only held you once, yet I can already feel murderous intent.”

Though Aaron’s lips brushed against Delia’s ear, his sharp eyes scanned beyond the forest.

Resentful killing intent from those who lost their leader seeped through the green woods.

“Commander… you already knew?”

“You didn’t even try to hide it. They’re openly protesting—telling me not to mistreat their prisoner.”

Iorenti’s soldiers were hidden among the trees, watching the two of them.

Imperial Soldiers loyal to their commander surrounded them for protection.

Aaron and Delia stood right in the middle of the tense standoff between the two groups.

“What on earth could your identity be, that they won’t leave your side? That just makes it impossible for me to let you go.”

Aaron’s arms, holding Delia, tightened with resolve.

“You’ll see soon enough.”

A faint breath escaped Delia’s lips, reddened like wild strawberries.

A sharp tingling sensation from her injured arm spread through her whole body.

“Let’s head back now, Commander.”

“No more strolling? You threw such a fit earlier about wanting to walk.”

“I’m tired.”

Being captured as a prisoner had revealed things she’d never noticed from the outside—

the army’s size, their weapons, their level of training.

In every aspect, the Imperial Soldiers were superior.

And with her now held as a hostage too,

any armed clash between the Imperial Soldiers and the royal guard would undoubtedly cause far greater losses for the latter.

She couldn’t allow the two sides to come to blows.

“Commander… I want to rest now.”

Delia whispered weakly, leaning against Aaron.

The steady, reassuring rhythm of Aaron’s heartbeat reached her.

If only she could plunge a dagger into that heart…

Would Iorenti regain its peace then?

Night deepened over Tarence Forest.

The Imperial camp held back the darkness with blazing torches.

The title of supreme commander was clearly no empty claim—soldiers bustled in and out of his tent even at this late hour.

“Commander. News from Cavat Plain.”

Aaron quickly scanned the letter delivered by the messenger hawk.

“Deputy Commander Cassel is stationed at Cavat Plain…”

Aaron trailed off mid-sentence, glanced briefly at Delia, and shifted the topic.

“What about Loyeni?”

“As per your orders, Count Staunen has been appointed governor.”

“Tell them to report every detail about Loyeni’s situation without omitting a single thing.”

“Yes, Commander.”

“And from now on, all news from Cavat Plain shall go through Aide-de-camp Dyke…”

Aaron paused mid-instruction to the waiting soldier, his body suddenly stiffening.

He turned his eyes toward his own bed, sensing an ominous presence beside him.

“Prisoner.”

“What?”

“Are you hungry?”

“No.”

“Shall I have someone pick more wild strawberries for you?”

“No.”

“Should I bring you more food then?”

“I said no! Why do you keep bothering me?”

Aaron gave her an exasperated look as she snapped at him.

“Then why on earth are you eating that?”

His gaze fell upon the prisoner holding a flower.

Delia was nibbling on the stem of a flower she’d picked during their walk earlier that day.

Each time her red lips bit into the beautiful primrose stem, it trembled faintly.

Petals disappeared between her chattering lips.

With both hands now free, Delia ate the flower with an air of relaxed ease.

“It’s sweet and delicious.”

“I can’t understand—what’s so tasty about that?”

“It’s fragrant and calms my heart.”

Aaron stroked his chin with his index finger and let out a small groan.

“Hmph.”

Indeed, a mad prisoner.

He’d met people who claimed flowers made them happy, but never anyone who said eating them brought peace.

Aaron shook his head slowly.

“Fragrance is meant to be smelled with your nose, not eaten with your mouth.”

“The fragrance tastes even sweeter this way.”

“You’re not human.”

Delia lowered her gaze to the bouquet as she saw Aaron’s suddenly serious expression.

She’d already eaten more than half, leaving gaps along the stems.

Unlike the commander, who revealed no openings.

The supreme commander was far from the easy opponent he appeared to be on the surface.

His eyes curved gently in a smile, yet she’d never once seen genuine amusement in his irises.

His tone sounded playful and light, but his words always carried deep weight.

Delia took a bite of the flower while studying Aaron with her blue eyes.

“Do you even know what flowers taste like, Commander?”

“You don’t need to know that to live. Besides, I don’t really like flowers.”

Delia listened intently to his voice—even his claim of disliking flowers sounded sweet to her ears.

The shifting air currents as he moved, the resonance of sounds he created, the subtle changes in his expression in response to her actions.

All her senses were focused on him, seeking any crack in the flawless commander.

“Commander, I can see exactly what you’re thinking. Please stop staring at me like I’m some bug.”

“I always thought flowers were for butterflies and bees. Never occurred to me people ate them.”

Aaron chuckled softly and turned his attention back to the letter.

“I eat them to survive. I’m a prisoner who might die today or tomorrow—eating this is the only thing that brings me peace.”

Aaron quickly absorbed the letter’s contents and clicked his tongue lightly.

“Tsk. I already told you—I won’t let you die carelessly.”

“Do you treat all prisoners this well?”

“No. You’re useful.”

Aaron answered nonchalantly, yet his mind was entirely occupied by this mysterious prisoner.

Her bold, unyielding attitude even in captivity suggested she’d never been someone who bowed before others.

Her subordinates, who lingered around her like bound ghosts, refusing to leave her side, were also highly unusual.

And then there was her relentless obsession with escape.

Just who exactly was this prisoner?

“It’s pathetic to talk about my ‘usefulness’ without even knowing who I really am.”

“That’s exactly why I’m keeping you close—to find out.”

There was definitely something special about that prisoner—perhaps something capable of shifting the tide of the war.

At that thought, Aaron let out a soft chuckle.

He remembered the prisoner earlier that day, eyes darting like a deer’s across the field, searching for any chance to flee.

It would be a shame to wait idly until her true identity was finally revealed.

“What can you possibly learn just by watching me? We’re both wasting time.”

“I plan to do more than just watch.”

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
