“Perfect timing. I was just coming to ask you about that. By the way, what happens if a priest and I run into each other?”

“What do you mean?”

I told Matila about what had happened with Alexandre. She laughed so hard she nearly doubled over.

“Will I get exorcised by divine power or something?”

“No. It won’t matter at all. Only someone as high-ranking as a chief priest would be able to detect traces of magic, and he’s at the temple, not the palace.”

That put my mind at ease. I readily accepted the magic. Afterward, Matila gave me a tiny amount of powder to carry. The powder clung tightly between the mist particles.

“What is this?”

“It’s a laxative. Sprinkle it into that guy’s food.”

“Good idea.”

I took the minuscule amount of powder and went back to Alexandre.

He was in another room, lying on the bed, grinding his teeth at Blanc.

“Just you wait until I get permission for an audience. I’ll throw that mangy dog straight into the farm grinder and grind him to dust.”

Then he went on and on, boasting to himself about how brave he was—insisting it wasn’t because he was weak that the dog had gotten him.

From what I’d heard from Philip, during the battle he hadn’t even stayed to command—he’d fled outright.
