After taking a deep breath, Blair rose from her seat and calmly stepped forward toward Ivan.
“Witness Blair Delmarque swears before God and His Imperial Majesty the Emperor to speak only the truth.”
Once the oath of truth was concluded, Ivan asked Blair,
“I understand the witness had lost all memory of the incident ten years ago.”
“That was true until just a few months ago. However, after being kidnapped by unknown assailants and experiencing another fire incident several months ago, I recovered my memories of the event from ten years past.”
“Witness, recount everything you saw that day without omission.”
Blair retraced her recovered memories and revealed the truth of that day.
That Esmeralda had sensed something amiss and hidden her in a wardrobe; that upon waking from sleep, she had witnessed Marina Florent—the palace maid who was said to have saved her—strangling Esmeralda; and that she herself had killed Marina.
