Herdin, pondering those words, looked toward Ruth, who sat across from him, checking schedules and documents.

“Ruth.”

“Yes.”

“What do you think about building a port in Ardelle that connects to the Eastern Continent?”

The Ardelle Empire was situated in the western part of the continent and thus had no ports on its eastern side. To trade with the Eastern Continent, one had to sail all the way around the vast Western Continent.

Although a few territories, including Duke Delmarque’s domain in the empire’s northeastern region, bordered eastern coastal waters, those shores were entirely mudflats—unsuitable for harboring large vessels.

Trade with the Eastern Continent, which Ivan coveted enough to consider war, was something Herdin himself had long kept an eye on.

The problem was simply that there was no feasible way to make it happen.

Though surprised by the sudden question, Ruth answered his lord faithfully.

“It’d be amazing, wouldn’t it? Goods from the Eastern Continent, currently imported through other nations, could be brought in cheaply, and our exports could earn far more without middlemen taking their cut.”

“Indeed.”

“It would truly usher in a golden age. That’s why His Majesty constantly schemes for any excuse to start a war with Clania. Of course, I think it’s utterly mad… But why bring this up all of a sudden?”

“I’m thinking of building a port in Livren that connects to the Eastern Continent.”
