The Duke Only Needs My Child (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 6
Herdin knocked and entered Blair’s bedroom.
Contrary to his expectation that she would be startled by his visit or fast asleep, Blair was seated at the table, deeply absorbed in something—so engrossed she hadn’t even noticed his arrival.
‘What is she doing?’
At a glance, it looked as though she was writing something.
‘…She’s so small.’
Though he always felt this whenever he saw her, from a distance she seemed even tinier than usual.
The occasional dry cough only made her appear more fragile.
‘For that matter, the room is rather chilly.’
Despite it being deep winter, the fireplace was nearly extinguished.
Outside the window lay pristine white snow; inside, a cool room—and within that scene, a woman as pale as snow.
Herdin thought the nickname “snow fairy” suited her rather well as he approached from behind.
Still engrossed in her writing, Blair remained unaware of his presence.
Herdin leaned over her small back, bracing himself on the desk to peer at what she was writing.
Only then did Blair sense someone nearby and jerked her head up in surprise—bumping it firmly against his solid chest.
“Ah.”
Their eyes met: his cool blue gaze looking down, hers violet looking up.
“Why do you look so surprised? It’s our wedding night, after all—it’s only natural for husband and wife to spend the night together.”
“…I didn’t expect you to come.”
“Even though you’ve stayed awake waiting until now?”
His pointed remark made Blair press her lips tightly shut.
“I was just waiting on the off chance… It wouldn’t be proper to be asleep when you arrived, my lord—no, when you came.”
At the word “you” slipping from Blair’s lips, Herdin’s eyes darkened further.
“What is this?”
He’d noticed the paper she’d been writing on and asked.
Blair quickly added an explanation.
“It’s a contract. Since this is a contractual marriage, I thought it best to put it in writing.”
Herdin picked up the contract and sat beside her, beginning to read aloud.
“Article 1. Contracting party Blair Sonnet von Ardelle shall do her utmost to cooperate in uncovering the truth behind the Imperial Palace fire incident. The contract duration is one year, but regardless of the timeframe, this marriage contract shall terminate immediately upon revelation of the truth. Responsibility regarding the truth shall follow Imperial law.”
His lazy baritone voice resonated through the quiet room.
“Article 2. During the term of this contract, both parties shall respect each other as husband and wife. ‘Respect’ herein means fulfilling spousal duties while considering the other’s dignity—such as sharing a meal together once a week or attending important banquets and events jointly.”
As Herdin read the clause, Blair belatedly wished she could revise the contract.
She’d just realized she’d unconsciously written into it her lingering resentment from her past life—how he’d ignored and neglected her.
Though even if she did, he wouldn’t understand the feelings behind those words…
Thinking this far, Blair gave a bitter smile and spoke.
“If you’d like to negotiate any terms, please say so freely. Since I drafted this alone, I’ll revise it to reflect your opinion.”
At that moment, Herdin, still reading the contract, asked,
“What will you do if either party fails to fulfill the terms of this contract?”
Blair was momentarily speechless. She’d considered negotiating the terms, but never thought about what would happen if someone broke them.
‘As he said, there must be consequences for breach—otherwise, no one would bother keeping the contract.’
After a brief pause, Blair opened her mouth with a determined expression.
“If someone fails to uphold the contract terms…”
“And if they don’t?”
“I won’t grant a divorce.”
Since this marriage was forced upon them by imperial decree, continuing it would surely be dreadful for him.
Especially since he likely resented her.
“Ah.”
Yet despite Blair’s attempt at a fearsome threat, he showed no sign of fear.
If anything, he seemed faintly amused—was that just her imagination?
Just as Blair wondered this, Herdin resumed reading the next clause.
“In the event that either party requests cohabitation for the aforementioned reasons, the other shall fulfill marital duties by complying up to twice per month…”

Herdin’s gaze shifted from the contract to Blair. Setting it down, he spoke.
“My lady, when you say ‘cohabitation,’ you surely don’t mean two grown adults merely holding hands while sleeping, do you?”
Blair looked slightly flustered by his mocking tone but offered no rebuttal.
So his assumption was correct, then.
“Are you offering to serve as a bed-warmer, then?”
…Was it really necessary to go this far?
Now he was genuinely curious.
What was this woman’s true motive for going so far as to offer her own body to maintain this contractual marriage?
So he deliberately provoked her.
And as intended, Blair took the bait and flared up.
“Don’t speak like that! I just…!”
“Just?”
Blair, trying to retort, faltered and fell silent.
This clause was the most crucial one for her—crafted specifically for the moment she needed to conceive Asiel.
But she couldn’t possibly tell him the truth.
She couldn’t confess she’d returned from the future with such an absurd tale, and above all, he must never learn of Asiel’s existence.
If he found out, would he leave Asiel alone?
He might even eliminate Asiel—the potential obstacle—to secure the child he’d have with Miera as his heir.
That was absolutely unacceptable.
Blair’s plan was to resolve everything related to Asiel before conceiving him, divorce before he discovered her pregnancy, and leave the Empire.
In the end, Blair fabricated a plausible lie.
“I just… want us to have a good relationship, at least for now…”
Herdin scoffed, watching Blair stubbornly conceal her true intentions.
“A good relationship.”
How could we possibly have a good relationship?
Because of your mother’s single word, because of your single testimony, my aunt was buried in disgrace without even a chance to defend herself.
I had to accept it all without ever knowing the truth.
He didn’t know her true motive, but seeing her willing to sacrifice even her body made her desperation clear—and rather laughable.
You ignored my desperation back then, and now…
If she’s just going to willingly hand herself over, well… that wouldn’t feel quite fair.
If her most precious possession was her purity, then he’d take it.
Only then would it be a fair exchange.
Herdin rose and stepped toward Blair.
At the sudden closeness, Blair held her breath.
He was right before her—close enough that their breaths would mingle.
“Then, according to this clause, I suppose I must fulfill my marital duties.”
Blair flinched at his hand caressing her cheek and his low voice whispering in her ear—but what startled her more was his words.
She hadn’t expected him to invoke this clause himself. She’d included it, yes, but he no longer needed to pretend to love her.
‘I thought it would only be used when I conceived Asiel.’
Blair, who’d assumed he wouldn’t even set foot in her bedroom, found herself rather flustered.
“It’s not absolutely necessary to… consummate it on the wedding night…”
“I want to.”
His low whisper fixed on her flushed lips. His thumb, cradling her cheek, gently stroked them.
At the heat from his fingertips, her heart began pounding rapidly.
In that instant, Herdin lifted his gaze from her lips to meet her eyes.
“Right now.”
Raw, unrestrained desire flickered in his blue eyes.
Before Blair could recoil from the shock of his primal hunger, his lips descended and claimed hers.
Blair suddenly remembered—he was a man, after all.
‘Men can share a bed with someone they don’t care for,’ they said.

Yes, this wasn’t love. Nor was it feigned affection for some other purpose.
It was merely momentary desire.
Thinking this, she felt oddly relieved. If giving her body to him meant she could reunite with Asiel, she’d give it without hesitation.
Blair steeled herself, resigned, and closed her eyes.
Herdin parted her lips and invaded her mouth, seeking out her timid tongue and entwining with it.
“Mmm…”
As the wet flesh rubbed against her tender inner skin, a moan slipped out unbidden. Her breath quickened, heat flooded her body, and her mind grew hazy.
His lips remained fiercely hot and sweet—cruelly so.
Herdin lifted Blair effortlessly onto his lap and began devouring her in earnest.
Her plump lips, her soft tongue, her ragged breaths, and the pained little moans escaping through her teeth—all of it.
Herdin grasped the soft swell revealed by the strap of her nightgown slipping off her shoulder.
“Ah…!”
Startled, Blair pulled away from his lips. Herdin, about to kiss her again, paused.
Blair met his eyes—and hesitated. His gaze was as sharp as a beast’s whose meal had been interrupted.
Yet even then, his arms held her firmly, showing no intention of releasing his prey.
Pressed tightly against him, she felt something heavy beneath her legs. Recognizing what it was, Blair froze.
She wanted to get up immediately, but feared moving would only bring them closer.
Blair slowly averted her eyes and whispered in a small voice,
“Let’s… go to the bed.”
It was practically a plea.
Herdin stared at her silently for a moment, then lifted her as she’d asked.
Even in that brief interval, his lips never left the nape of her neck—he clung to her like a suckling beast.
Striding to the bed, he laid Blair down and climbed over her, then began removing her already half-undone nightgown.
His eyes never left hers.

“How dare you!”
“How dare you make me love you, only to cast me aside as nothing more than a friend?!?
“I will never accept that.”
“I will never let you return to him.”

This was the first novel that introduced me to the matriarchal genre. I’ve read it three times already!
At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.
Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.
The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.
Synopsis:
