“Herdin.”

Blair smiled faintly as she watched him approach.

There was no resentment, anger, or sorrow in those eyes gazing at him—only a smile born from having nothing left to wish for from a man who would soon become a stranger.

Unable to bear meeting that smile any longer, Herdin lowered his gaze. Her noticeably swollen belly caught his eye.

Asiel was due to be born early next year. Though there were still roughly three months left, her frail frame already seemed strained by the weight of her pregnancy.

Herdin knelt on one knee before her, meeting her eyes as he spoke.

“How about returning to the capital to prepare for childbirth? There are more experienced midwives there, and it would be easier to find a physician.”

“I’m fine. A child can be born anywhere, and by now I know my pregnancy symptoms well enough.”

Asiel would be Blair’s first child, but this was her second pregnancy. The fear of pregnancy and childbirth had already faded. Thus, there was nothing left for him, as her husband, to do—nothing at all.

Before Herdin could bring himself to speak further, Blair spoke first.

“While staying here, I’ve thought about it—whether we could ever love each other again.”

Herdin looked at Blair as she continued.

Somehow, from the way she smiled at him, he already sensed what she would say next. He didn’t want to hear those words, yet he had no right to refuse.

“But this… doesn’t seem right.”
