Just as Veronica had said, no matter how much they looked around, there was no adult who seemed like a teacher anywhere.

“Indeed. It seems dangerous, especially playing by the lake. Now that it’s come up, shall we go check it out up close?”

“Yes.”

Veronica and Judith walked toward the lake. Even though the air had grown quite chilly as evening approached, the children didn’t seem cold at all and kept jumping into the lake with loud splashes.

Watching the children laugh uncontrollably, warm smiles naturally formed on both Veronica’s and Judith’s lips.

Just then, Judith shivered and pointed toward the far side of the lake.

“Nia, look over there! That… that’s definitely someone flailing, right? They’re not just playing in the water, are they?”

“Oh…”

Veronica turned her head and looked where Judith was pointing. Far out on the lake, a child appeared to be flailing helplessly.

Veronica immediately ran toward the lake. She tore off her robe and leaped into the water with a splash.

The lake wasn’t very deep—but its bottom was uneven, with some parts shallow and others suddenly deep.

She didn’t stop walking. The water gradually deepened, rising past her waist. She was now just a little closer to reaching the child.

“Gah! Gah-huh! Help… phew! Sa… gah-huh!”

Hearing the child’s weak cries, Veronica clenched her teeth and pushed forward.

“Ugh!”
