In the early evening, Tae Eun received a call from Woo Jin saying he would be finishing work a bit late. At the same time, Min Kyung Hoon and Ji Eun took turns calling her—and, as always, she ignored every one of those calls.

Yet the moment she sat down, it felt like sitting on a bed of thorns. They were not the kind of people she could avoid forever. She longed to simply let go, yet the single title of “family” bound them to her like shackles.

She placed her phone on the sofa table and turned away—when suddenly, the intercom rang.

Instinctively, Tae Eun checked the time. Seven in the evening. Could Woo Jin have already finished work, despite saying he’d be late? But then she instantly recalled that Woo Jin had never once pressed the lobby buzzer from the first floor.

Could it be—had Min Kyung Hoon and Ji Eun somehow discovered where she lived? Her hair stood on end in alarm. Approaching the intercom, she was so startled by the unexpected visitor that she staggered backward.

Fortunately, it was neither Min Kyung Hoon nor Ji Eun. Nor was it Woo Jin arriving home early. The figure clearly visible on the intercom screen was none other than Chairwoman Jung.

How on earth had Chairwoman Jung decided to come here? The thought that what was bound to happen had finally arrived made Tae Eun’s chest ache heavily.

After pressing the intercom to unlock the lobby door, she walked toward the entrance—not wanting to leave the elderly Chairwoman Jung waiting outside for long. Opening the door, she saw Chairwoman Jung just stepping out of the elevator. She appeared to have come entirely alone, without even her secretary.

“Were you asleep?”

“No, Grandmother. I wasn’t sleeping yet—it’s only seven.”

“I see. Then you’ll have some time to talk with me, won’t you?”

“Yes.”

Though the voice sounded gentle, as always, it carried an unmistakable, unrefusable authority. Tae Eun courteously guided Chairwoman Jung into the living room.

“Shall I make you at least a cup of tea?”

“No need. I came here today to talk with you, so don’t bother—just sit down.”
