In the dark office. A place that should have been completely silent was now filled with the wet, obscene sounds of them exchanging saliva.

Even though he already knew the taste from their second kiss, the woman was maddeningly sweet. Every time he sucked, sweet nectar overflowed like fruit juice.

To taste her more deeply, he pulled her nape closer and tilted his head. He bit and sucked on her soft lower lip. She was the one being sucked, yet the sharp ache somehow belonged to Woo Jin.

He could feel her tightly gripping the collar of his suit. Not only that—her trembling traveled straight through the heated inside of his thighs. Even though every part of them that touched (except hands and faces) was safely armored with layers of clothing, the scorching heat made it feel like their bodies might burn.

Finally, when her breathing grew ragged and she parted her lips to catch a breath, he smoothly slipped inside.

After that, he couldn’t think of anything. His mind went completely dark, every nerve focused solely on this miraculous sensation she was giving him.

Hot, moist breaths passed back and forth between them. In the end, she trembled violently in his arms and then collapsed with a soft thud.

Woo Jin easily lifted and held her. In the process, his hand brushed her hips, but she didn’t seem to care—or rather, she didn’t have the presence of mind to care.

When he briefly separated their lips so she could breathe, she let out the breath she’d been holding all at once.

“Haa…”

Even that exhaled breath drove him insane. The moment that formless breath touched his lips, he felt a heat so intense it could melt him.

Seriously, why is she so sweet?

From head to toe, there wasn’t a single thing about her that wasn’t sweet. The brushing of their skin, her quivering lips, her frightened eyes—now even the breath she released was driving him out of his mind.

He hadn’t planned for this when he brought her to the office. Yet the moment she stood with the dazzling Seoul nightscape behind her, he reached out without thinking.

If he’d known it would turn out like this, he should have taken her to a hotel.

His body was already burning so hot that he could feel a heavy ache. During the brief pause, she trembled but didn’t pull away. She simply kept gasping with those unfathomably deep black eyes, as if she couldn’t believe what was happening.

The urge to claim her lips again began to devour his flickering reason. Instead of kissing her, though, he gently brushed back her disheveled hair.

If he started kissing her again, he really wouldn’t be able to stop at just a kiss this time—so he gathered the last scraps of his plummeting patience and barely managed to collect his scattered senses.

Yet when he looked at her—cheeks flushed crimson, eyes cast downward—thirst surged anew. She was so beautiful, ripe and red from the marks he’d left.

But today, this was as far as it went.

He gazed down at the woman whose neck was flushed red and asked playfully in a voice still thick with unspent desire.

“Shall we go to a hotel?”

He never actually intended to. He just wanted to tease her because she looked so pretty when flustered.

Sure enough, she answered in a trembling voice, clearly startled.

“N-no. Please take me home.”

Her unexpectedly firm refusal drew an unfamiliar laugh from Woo Jin’s lips. It seemed tonight, just like that other night—he’d have to cool his heated body alone because of her.

* * *

Late at night.

Tae Eun tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The memory of the kiss they shared in Woo Jin’s office that evening still lingered, tormenting her.

Their second kiss.

Today’s had been even deeper and hotter than the first, yet she felt no rejection at all. On the contrary, her body had melted so completely she nearly collapsed; her legs had almost given out. Thankfully Woo Jin had caught her, but just remembering that moment made her face burn.

His hand had definitely been on her hips, yet at the time the heat of the kiss had been so overwhelming she hadn’t even felt embarrassed.

And that wasn’t all. Compared to how skilled he was, her responses had once again been so clumsy. On top of that, this time she had clearly felt his hardened body.

With any other man she would have been terrified and run away. Yet even after the kiss ended, she couldn’t bring herself to leave his embrace for a long while.

When she’d eavesdropped on her aunts in the restroom, she had worried what if she ended up hating him once she sorted her feelings—but that worry had been unnecessary. She didn’t hate him. She still felt no aversion.

If anything, strangely, she felt as though she had taken one step closer to him.

—So, Min Tae Eun… close your eyes and just trust me this once, okay?

Those words he’d once let slip echoed in her mind.

Even if her aunts’ fears turned out to be true, she had no power to change it. The only thing she could do in this situation was trust him.

Once she decided that, her anxiety vanished. Only then could Tae Eun close her eyes and finally seek sleep. It was a truly deep and exhausting night.

* * *

The next day.

Having just returned to his office after a meeting, Woo Jin took a brief moment to gaze out at the bright Seoul skyline and let out a quiet chuckle.

All day long, Min Tae Eun kept flashing into his mind. He remembered how her face had burned bright red even in the darkness, and heat surged through him even when he sat still.

“I’m going crazy.”

He really was going crazy. He tried to shake it off, but those memories attacked without warning—practically irresistible.

Damn, I should’ve held back. Guess I poked the bear for no reason.

They say familiarity makes it scarier; the sensation was so vivid that an unquenchable thirst kept rising. In the end, Woo Jin took off his suit jacket, loosened his tie, and took a deep breath.

Just then, his secretary announced an unscheduled visitor. It was odd, but before the secretary could leave, the office door swung open boldly and his eldest aunt, Seo Young Ja, appeared.

Yeah, only someone like her could barge in here without an appointment.

“What brings you here?”

He already had a pretty good guess. It was the first time Young Ja had ever come to his office, and it was the day after the formal family introduction—so he could easily predict the topic she wanted to discuss.

“I came because I have something to say.”

Young Ja dismissed the secretary who was about to prepare tea, sat down, and faced him with an emotionless expression. Then, true to her bulldozer personality, she fired a direct question.

“Why—why her? I just can’t understand it. No matter how much I think about it, I can’t figure out why you chose that girl.”

“…”

“Is this some kind of revenge because I made you break up with Park Seo Woo?”

His brow furrowed involuntarily. He genuinely couldn’t believe those words were coming from Seo Young Ja of all people.

What on earth did Min Tae Eun have to do with Seo Woo?

Woo Jin’s expression, still seated at his desk, openly revealed his discomfort. But Young Ja didn’t take back what she said. Instead, she dug in deeper, more provocatively.

“Park Seo Woo didn’t fit into our family. And yet you’re going to marry someone like that? Is it ‘anyone but Park Seo Woo’?”

Her words were sharp and prickly all over, yet—typical of Young Ja—she never raised her voice. That was why the anger she harbored felt even more lethal and threatening than most people’s.

Woo Jin could fully read the fury inside her. But he couldn’t sympathize with it. Above all, he could not tolerate the way she was putting Tae Eun down.

“She is going to be my wife. ‘Anyone,’ you say?”

“No, calling her ‘anyone’ is actually the nicest way I could put it after thinking hard. I could have said far worse. You saw it yourself—that family.”

“Still, you took Tae Eun’s side yesterday, Aunt.”

“Don’t make me laugh. I didn’t side with her because I thought she was pretty—I just couldn’t stand watching that woman who calls herself the stepmother acting so pathetic. Who in this day and age brags about raising someone else’s child alone? And when you marry a man with a kid, you’re supposed to be prepared to embrace that child too. Acting like it’s some grand achievement—how vulgar and crass.”

Young Ja’s tightly drawn brows wrinkled slightly, as if she still couldn’t believe what she’d witnessed. It felt like yesterday’s unpleasantness was being vividly replayed.

“That family will be a lifelong stain on you. And worse—it could become a disgrace to our entire family. You saw it: openly declaring they’re entering politics.”

“…”

“And that’s not all. When the wife acts like that, at least the father should have some sense, but that man is so whipped by his new wife he only knows how to take her side. Ha… I’ve never seen such freaks in my life. And you still insist on this marriage?”

“Yes. I do.”

“Why on earth? If this is because of Park Seo Woo—”

“I’m the one who doesn’t understand you, Aunt. Why do you keep bringing up Park Seo Woo when I’m marrying Min Tae Eun?”

“You really don’t know? I wondered if you deliberately picked that kind of family to torment me because I said no to Park Seo Woo.”

“Aunt. You raised me like your own, yet you still don’t know me?”

He slowly rose from behind the desk. His already large frame seemed to overwhelm everything around him.

But this was Seo Young Ja.

The woman who had raised him like her own son since he was little. So the intimidating aura that terrified others had little effect on her.

“That’s exactly why I’m saying this—because I know you better than anyone. What do you lack that you have to marry a girl like that? Did I raise you with such care just to get a niece-in-law like her?”

“No. You don’t know me at all, Aunt.”

“What exactly don’t I know?”

“You still think Park Seo Woo and I broke up because of Grandmother and you.”

“Didn’t you?”

“If I had really wanted her, Aunt, I would never have let her go—no matter what threats you or Grandmother made. I would have held on tight and made her mine. Exactly like I’m doing with Min Tae Eun right now.”

Young Ja understood the hidden meaning behind his slow but clear voice perfectly. It was Woo Jin’s indirect threat: no matter what anyone said, he would never let Min Tae Eun go.

Her perfectly shaped eyebrows rose slightly arched—an uncharacteristically shaken expression for her; she was losing her composure.

“So let me say this clearly: I’m not choosing Min Tae Eun as a replacement for Park Seo Woo. I’m not stupid enough to ruin my life in some sewer of revenge, Aunt.”

“…”

“It’s marriage. When choosing the person I’ll spend my entire life with, where is there room for something like revenge?”

His voice was as unwavering as his conviction. Rather, as he spoke with arms folded in front of Young Ja, a leisurely confidence radiated from him.

As if to say no one could shake him—no one could ever bend him.

Today, Woo Jin’s shadow looked especially huge. Young Ja’s eyes wavered as she looked up at him. Instinctively, she realized this decision could not be reversed.

Still unable to comprehend, she asked again.

“Then answer just one thing. Why… why her?”

Suppressed anger seeped into her quiet voice.

That was how special Woo Jin was to Young Ja. The child she had borne in her heart after becoming infertile and divorcing. That was why he was more precious, why she clung so desperately.

Even marrying the daughter of a good family would have pained her—Min Tae Eun was simply unthinkable.

That was why she hadn’t slept a wink last night after the family introduction. More than Tae Eun herself, it was that disgraceful family that made her ill with anger. Especially Ji Eun, pretending to be refined while acting like a fox—they were complete opposites who could never mix. So she had come as a final hope to persuade Woo Jin.

Woo Jin knew that heart of hers well. Even if their relationship had soured a little lately, to Young Ja he was the nephew she would give anything for without regret.

Sometimes he wondered: if only her way of caring for him had been a little softer, if only no one had been hurt because of it, maybe they could have faced each other differently.

That was why he could never be completely harsh with her. Despite all the wounds her twisted affection had caused, the sharp edges of his heart always dulled bit by bit.

Even in this moment it was the same.

Seeing her look at him with trembling eyes, the urge to give the answer she wanted and the urge to speak the truth clashed inside him. But the moment Tae Eun’s clear face came to mind, the answer became obvious.

“If it’s Min Tae Eun…”

“…”

“…I think I could love her.”

Even if she clicked her tongue and called him crazy, it couldn’t be helped.

Because it was the truth.
