That Night's Circumstance (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 16
It was the kind of night when sleep wouldn’t come easily.
Yet, for some reason, In Ho was sleeping more peacefully than ever before.
He couldn’t even tell how long it had been since his last truly deep sleep.
He wanted to savor this sweet moment for as long as possible.
But suddenly, a familiar voice cut through the cozy dreamscape.
In Ho furrowed his brows sharply.
“…Hyung.”
Ugh, what now?
He scowled at the hand shaking his shoulder.
Even in his half-asleep state, his flailing arm must have been rough enough to briefly halt the persistent shaking.
That was fine by him.
He tried drifting back to sleep.
The dream, though empty of substance, was far too sweet to wake from just yet.
But the hand, undeterred by his earlier irritation, resumed its interruption once again.
“…Hyeong.”
Seriously, who is it now?
In Ho’s annoyance surged at the relentless touch.
He finally dragged himself out of the dream and forced his eyes open—only to be met immediately by Myung Woo’s face.
In Ho scowled deeply.
“Ugh, why are you waking me up so early in the morning…?”
“Hyung, Assistant Director just called. They sorted out the location issue—if you’re okay with it, they want to shoot just one scene today. What should I tell them?”
Myung Woo rattled off the explanation before In Ho could even voice his full groggy complaint.
In Ho’s frown deepened instantly.
‘Is that really important enough to wake me up at this hour?’
He wanted to snap back immediately, but his body still lingered in the haze of sleep, heavy and sluggish.
He waved his hand irritably a few times.
“Do whatever you want.”
It was the most half-hearted reply imaginable.
Yet Myung Woo, apparently satisfied with the answer, quickly dashed out of the hospital room.
After the brief commotion, In Ho resolutely shut his eyes again.
Though the deep sleep from last night had seemingly erased days of accumulated fatigue, he still didn’t want to wake up—
After all, it didn’t seem like he needed to head to the set right away. Just a little longer…
“What? The set?”
In Ho’s eyes snapped wide open as if he’d never been sleepy at all, and he bolted upright.
It felt like he’d just been struck by lightning.
He looked around dazedly, scanning his surroundings.
Myung Woo, who had just been shaking him awake, was nowhere in sight.
“Where’d he go already…?”
In Ho muttered under his breath, running a hand through his messy hair.
Regardless of where he’d gone, if they really needed to go to the set, Myung Woo would be back soon.
He decided to stretch while waiting and clarify the situation once more.
He’d felt well-rested from his sleep, but now his body felt astonishingly light.
That odd sense of refreshment clashed strangely with the current confusion.
Feeling vaguely guilty about feeling so good under the circumstances, he scratched his temple and glanced around the room.
It was still dark—must be before sunrise.
What time was it, anyway?
He shifted in bed to look for his phone—
He needed to check the time.
“Where did I put my phone again…?”
He fumbled around, turning this way and that, searching for it with his hands.
Trending
He was sure he’d left it by his pillow, but no matter how much he looked, he couldn’t find it.
Maybe he’d put it somewhere else before sleeping?
As he kept scanning the room, eyes darting around while searching for his phone, a sudden electric jolt shot up his spine.
“Wait, hold on.”
Something was off. The hand groping the bed wasn’t Soo Yeon’s—it was his own.
And that wasn’t all.
The clothes on his body weren’t Soo Yeon’s—they were a hospital patient gown.
In Ho stared down at his body with wide, incredulous eyes, patting himself all over.
The tactile sensation beneath his fingertips was completely different from Soo Yeon’s body he’d inhabited over the past few days.
It was far too firm. Compared to Soo Yeon’s soft, delicate frame, his own body felt as solid as a rock.
“Could it be…?”
His gaze drifted lower.
Though the loose hospital gown concealed his silhouette, the unmistakable morning physiology of a man was clearly evident at his core.
A confident, unmistakable curve.
Which meant this—this was definitely…
“Me?”
It was unquestionably his own body.
In Ho shot upright from the bed.
And right across from him, lying clearly on the sofa, was Soo Yeon’s face.
“Is this real? Did we actually switch back?”
In Ho stared at Soo Yeon, half out of his mind with disbelief.
It was utterly impossible to believe.
He’d fallen asleep in Soo Yeon’s body—but now he was back in his own. How was he supposed to make sense of this?
“Could this be a dream?”
He slapped his cheek hard enough to make a sound.
Immediately, sharp pain flared across his skin—undeniably real.
So it wasn’t a dream. Then—then!
He scrambled off the bed, forgetting even to put on slippers, and rushed into the attached bathroom.
There, facing the mirror—
He couldn’t tear his eyes away from his own reflection.
No matter how many times he looked, it was unquestionably his face.
Combined with the sting on his cheek and the fresh ache from pinching his arm just now, this was definitely not a dream.
Which meant—he was back.
Their swapped bodies had finally, truly returned to normal.
“How on earth did this happen?”
Still unable to believe it, he touched his face repeatedly, shaking his head in confusion.
No matter how hard he thought, he couldn’t figure out what had caused the reversal.
Truthfully, all he’d done yesterday was briefly talk with Soo Yeon while reeling from shock, then spent the whole night wallowing in guilt over their past marriage.
“But why did our bodies suddenly switch back like this?”
It should’ve been a reason to celebrate—yet he couldn’t bring himself to feel pure joy.
He needed to understand the cause, but there wasn’t even the slightest clue.
Just then, he heard someone shifting restlessly outside the bathroom.
“Oh, right. This isn’t the time for that.”
He hurried out of the bathroom and approached Soo Yeon, gently shaking her awake.
“Sorry, but can you get up for a sec?”
“Mmm…?”
“Choi Soo Yeon, snap out of it. We’re back! We switched back!”
His voice rose with excitement he couldn’t contain.
Soo Yeon finally opened her eyes slowly, rubbing her face with one hand as she sat up groggily.
“Huh? What’s going on all of a sudden…?”

“Snap out of it and look at me.”
In Ho perched on the edge of the sofa table, waiting for her to fully wake up.
After a moment,
Soo Yeon exhaled sharply, sat upright, and blinked several times.
“What time is it? It still feels like the middle of the night—why are you already…?”
“That’s not what matters right now! Just look at my face!”
“Huh? You wake someone up in the middle of the night just to look at your face? That’s so—wait, what?”
Her pupils dilated widely as she finally grasped the situation.
From that alone, In Ho could guess exactly what she must be thinking.
“Yes. We’re back to normal. You’re Choi Soo Yeon again, and I’m Seo In Ho.”
He nodded, confirming the unbelievable reality before them.
Yet Soo Yeon remained speechless, her mouth hanging open in disbelief.
“How—how…?”
“That’s exactly what I want to know! How did we switch back? We didn’t even understand why it happened in the first place—now this! Did you do anything unusual yesterday—something out of the ordinary?”
“Something… unusual?”
“Yes. Think hard.”
At his words, Soo Yeon knit her brows together in deep thought.
In Ho watched her intently, his gaze serious.
After a moment of silence,
Soo Yeon glanced at him briefly, then shook her head with a somber expression.
“I don’t know. I just stayed in the hospital room all day, and took a short walk before you came. Nothing else special happened…”
“Nothing unusual during your walk?”
“No… I deliberately avoided people—didn’t want to draw attention and end up in another awkward situation.”
“Ugh, then what is it? Why did this happen?”
In Ho squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them again.
No matter how hard he tried, there was no answer.
According to Soo Yeon, nothing out of the ordinary had happened to her yesterday—
And the same applied to him.
Frustration creased his brow deeply.
Then, lost in thought, Soo Yeon murmured to herself.
“Could it be because we slept in the same space…?”
In their current desperate situation, even the smallest hint couldn’t be ignored.
In Ho’s eyes flickered as he chewed over her words.
If sleeping in the same space caused the switch—
He tested her hypothesis against their past experiences—
And immediately let out a heavy sigh.
“But that can’t be it. The first time our bodies switched, we were sleeping in different rooms.”
That was right. On the day they first swapped bodies, she had been in the master bedroom while he’d stayed in the guest room.
“Oh… that’s true.”
Soo Yeon replied in a deflated tone.
“Then what the hell is going on…?”
In Ho raked his fingers through his hair, messing it up completely.
Their bodies actually switching places—that was the sort of thing you only saw in movies or dramas.
Yet here they were, with not even the tiniest clue to explain it.
It was so infuriating he felt ready to burst.
Unable to find any relief for his mounting frustration, he clenched his eyes shut in irritation.
Then, suddenly, last night’s scene flashed through his mind.
“…I’m sorry.”
It was himself, holding Soo Yeon’s hand as she slept, apologizing quietly.
Could it be… because of that?

In Ho sank into thought, his expression unreadable.
Just then, Soo Yeon’s voice broke into his train of thought—
Erasing completely what might have been the crucial clue to their reversal.
“Well… at least we’re back now. Isn’t that enough?”
“Huh? What?”
In Ho raised an eyebrow, shooting her a sharp, instinctive glare—
A habitual reaction.
Her words had sounded so recklessly naive that the look came out before he could stop himself.
Frustration rose in his throat, nearly spilling out—
But he swallowed it back just in time.
Soo Yeon sat with her head bowed low, utterly crestfallen.
Only then did In Ho force himself to soften his expression.
“Now that we’re back to normal… you’re truly in your own body, and I’m in mine.”
“…”
“So that means—at the very least—I won’t end up putting you in a difficult situation again, like I did this time, while being in your body.”
A deeply bitter smile curled at the corner of Soo Yeon’s lips as she finished speaking.
Watching her expression closely, In Ho couldn’t help but furrow his brows again—
Not out of anger,
But because her words had pierced his already conflicted heart even deeper.
He let out a faint sigh and opened his mouth—
“It’s not like I actually caused you harm…”
“No.”
He wanted to say it wasn’t something she needed to dwell on that deeply.
But Soo Yeon cut him off before he could finish, as if already knowing what he’d say next.
“It might’ve been unavoidable for me—but it’s true I caused you trouble in your life.”
At her immediate, quiet admission, In Ho pressed his lips tightly together.
He didn’t know what to say.
Her expression was resolute—almost indifferent, even cold.
Her earlier despondent tone had completely vanished, replaced by detached calm.
For a brief moment, their gazes tangled—then hers pulled away coldly, and she turned away from him just as she always did.
That entire sequence seemed to embody the absolute worst state their relationship had sunk to.
And in that instant, it brought In Ho an indescribable ache deep within his chest.

The woman snatched his phone and hung up. Looking at his phone wallpaper, she awkwardly changed the subject: “An ancient painting, eh? It looks pretty good, it’s just that the person in the painting looks a bit like me.”
When he heard this, he sarcastically mocked her for being so delusional, completely unaware that, the person in front of him was the reincarnation of Wen Ru, the famous prime minister of Yuan Shun whom he most admired…
