Summer Must Die (16 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 11
People glanced curiously at Summer, who stood quietly behind them.
Summer was dressed unmistakably like a noble young lady. Unlike commoners, who struggled even to take a single bath, her smooth skin exuded a rich, fragrant scent of scented oil.
Suddenly feeling shy, Summer lowered her head.
All at once, the earrings in her ears and the diamond-studded necklace around her neck felt unbearably heavy. Still, she waited patiently until it was her turn.
After a long while, Summer finally slipped into the prayer room amid the bustling crowd and let out a hollow laugh.
The prayer room was shabby and nearly empty—nothing but a single statue stood inside.
Yet each person prayed fervently, pouring their deepest wishes into their prayers. Summer, too, closed her eyes and clasped her hands among them.
Fay watched Summer silently, her gaze unwavering.
“Summer, Summer!”
“……”
Even when called by Fay, Summer gave no reply. And soon after, a faint halo of light enveloped her—completely unnoticed by anyone else.
That was the exact moment a woman’s voice echoed inside Summer’s mind.
Summer held her breath, listening carefully to the voice.
It was the Author—the God of this world, its Creator. Just as Summer tried to listen further, the voice abruptly cut off. Simultaneously, the shimmering light surrounding her vanished.
“Hey, Summer! Did you see something? Huh? There was definitely something, right?”
“I… heard it.”
Summer replied, still in a daze.
Fay quickly grabbed Summer and hurried her out of the main sanctuary. The priests at the temple must not see Summer’s soul.
After Summer and Fay left, a man dressed in pure white robes appeared.
“Did you see it, Your Holiness?”
“God has come.”
“Then right away…!”
“No. Let this matter remain a secret between just the two of us. Understood?”
His voice was gentle yet carried an unmistakable air of authority. The priest instinctively swallowed hard and bowed his head.
“Understood. But about that light…”
“Shh.”
The man raised a smooth index finger to his lips.
Though his smile was warm, his gleaming violet eyes radiated a dangerous intensity.
[This is the timeline separator]“What did you hear?”
On the night before the imperial banquet, Fay leaped onto the windowsill the moment she entered the room and transformed into a cat. After a brief moment of hesitation, Summer gave a vague answer.
“I heard the voice of God.”
“What did it say?”
“It sounded like someone was deliberating whether to bestow evil or good upon a certain person.”
“What nonsense is that?”
“I know—it probably sounds crazy. But God really was pondering that.”
Summer hadn’t yet explained that this world was based on a romance novel. Fay frowned, clearly bafficked and unconvinced.
“If good and evil are both subject to God’s will, then who has the right to hold humans accountable for their sins?”
“Fay, actually…”
“You should ask God.”
“What?”
Summer snapped her head up in surprise at Fay’s words.
Fay snorted as if to say, “What’s so shocking about that?”
“If God decides humanity’s goodness and wickedness, then every evil act in this world is God’s fault. So the punishment for those sins should be laid before God—not humans. Isn’t that right?”
“Haha. Fay, out of everyone in this world, I like you the most.”
“Hmph. Flattery is poison. Anyway, have you finished your plans?”
“Yes.”
Fay, who had been lazily swishing her tail, shifted back into human form and perched lightly on the windowsill.
“But what if, contrary to your expectations, Summer’s soul doesn’t return?”
Trending
“……”
“If you want, I can send you back to your original world right now—regardless of whether Summer’s soul comes back or not.”
“……”
It was a tempting offer. It meant she could return home tomorrow if she truly wished to—no hesitation needed. Yet Summer remained silent.
“Think it over.”
Fay moved to leave again and opened the window. Summer quickly reached out and grabbed her before she could escape.
“What is it?”
“The window isn’t a door, Fay. Besides, nobody can see you anyway, so you might as well use the actual door.”
Fay had assumed Summer was too worn out and subdued to notice things like this—yet here she was, pointing it out with surprising clarity.
Caught off guard, Fay blinked blankly for a moment before suddenly turning bright red and coughing awkwardly.
“I know that!”
“Mary always complains how hard it is to clean the windowsill. Please understand.”
“Well, if you say so…”
With a haughty air, Fay turned and exited through the door. Once Fay was gone and Summer was alone in the room, she finally collapsed onto the bed.
“……”
Everything felt like a dream—being pulled into a book, meeting Fay, becoming friends with the heroine she’d always admired, even spending over a month in this mansion that felt like it belonged in France.
It all seemed like a fleeting mirage.
“I miss home…”
Summer buried her face in the pillow and choked back a sob.
What if Summer’s original soul failed to awaken during the banquet? If she returned alone to her world in that state, this body would lose its soul forever and vanish.
This body undoubtedly belonged to the original Summer. Until its rightful owner returned, it was only right to safeguard it carefully.
Her heart wavered violently.
Even if returning home was her only chance, climbing that tower herself was still a terrifying prospect.
Would she really die? Or should she delay it a bit longer? But she missed home so terribly.
Summer stayed wide awake all night, not sleeping a wink, until dawn broke and painted the beautiful Lindsey estate in soft blue light.
“……”
“What? Don’t tell me you stayed up all night?”
Fay entered the room looking pale and weary from sleeplessness, stretching her arms with a long yawn.
“Oh, Fay. You’re here early.”
“It’s an important day. So when are we leaving for the banquet?”
“We’ll probably leave as soon as we finish getting ready. But… still… can’t you sense Summer’s soul at all?”
“Not at all.”
“I see…”
“What’s wrong?”
Fay instantly sat beside Summer, her short legs dangling in the air. Summer rubbed her reddened eyes and forced a smile.
“If Summer’s soul appears today… I’ll go back to my original world right away. But if, contrary to my hopes, her soul still doesn’t awaken, I’ll wait one more month.”
“And if her soul still doesn’t form after that? What then?”
“Then… I’ll have no choice but to leave. Even if it means I’ll feel guilty toward the rightful owner of this body.”
Summer gave a faint, bittersweet smile.
“Fay, I’m glad I met you.”
Today was the day she had to say goodbye to this world
to return to her own.
“…When your soul separates from your body, I’ll come to retrieve it.”
Fay avoided Summer’s gaze and leaped abruptly down from the terrace.
When Summer looked down, she saw Fay—now a black cat—calmly walking away from the mansion.
“My lady.”
At the voice behind her, Summer turned around. Mary stood by the doorway, her expression unusually somber.
“Mary, you can take the day off. The other maids will handle everything anyway.”
“I know you find me repulsive.”
Mary’s voice was flat, carrying that unpleasant, uncanny quality—neither fully human nor machine-like. But Summer no longer saw Mary that way.

“I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
“Even so, I don’t see you like that anymore. I’ve realized how precious it is to have someone who can truly hear me.”
Summer offered Mary a gentle smile.
Mary—neither a character purely from her imagination nor a real person, but some ambiguous, strange existence in between.
Mary was unsettling, pitiful, welcome, odd—but not entirely unpleasant.
“Are you leaving, my lady?”
“…How do you know that?”
Summer asked, eyes wide with surprise. Instead of answering, Mary asked another question.
“Do you dislike this place?”
“Yes. Everyone besides you just rambles on however they please.”
“If you leave, my lady, I’ll be lonely.”
Honestly, Summer found it hard to believe Mary. Right now, Mary’s face looked so lifeless she doubted a single drop of blood would come out if pricked.
That Mary—of all people—talking about loneliness? It was a word that simply didn’t suit her.
“I can’t leave you alone like that. I’m sorry.”
“Do you trust the witch?”
“You know Fay? How? Can you see her?”
Shocked, Summer stepped forward and grabbed Mary by both shoulders. Mary had always been just an apathetic, expressionless maid who did her chores half-heartedly.
Aside from being able to talk to Summer due to her imagination, there had been nothing special about Mary at all.
Yet now Mary was speaking of a witch—someone like Fay, whom no one in this world could perceive or sense at all. Mary clearly saw and recognized her.
“Yes, I know her. My lady, don’t place too much trust in witches. To them, humans are no more than frogs.”
Her voice held no inflection, her eyes no soul.
Though nothing about Mary seemed trustworthy, strangely, those final words lingered stubbornly in Summer’s mind.
What am I missing?
