Caliph’s eyes turned toward the source of the sound. The moment his gaze met the other’s, his brow instinctively furrowed.

“We seem to be running into each other unusually often lately.”

Caliph’s reply, entirely unrelated to the question, carried an unmistakably domineering air—as if ready to crush his opponent in an instant. Yet Dwayne didn’t so much as blink.

“For Your Highness, the palace is your residence; for me, it is where I assist His Majesty with state affairs.”

“So today as well, you’ve come to assist your father with those affairs?”

“If you’re asking about my destination, I was on my way to the Empress’s quarters.”

Dwayne declared, with brazen confidence, that his reason for entering the palace was to see the Empress.

Caliph couldn’t help but sneer inwardly. So after staying quiet for so long, Dwayne apparently intended to openly conspire with the Empress now.

The fact that he displayed such boldness without even attempting to conceal it meant that, in the Duke’s eyes, Caliph was still nothing more than a greenhorn—and that thought instantly ignited Caliph’s simmering resentment.

“I see. It seems you’ve had quite a lot to discuss with Mother lately.”

“Wouldn’t it be stranger if there were no conversation between father and daughter?”

Caliph smiled calmly, his expression utterly unruffled. Though encountering Dwayne right before something agreeable was far from ideal, this minor irritation would vanish the moment he saw Ibelia.

Thinking of Ibelia, whom he was soon to meet, Caliph hurriedly took a step forward—but had barely moved a few paces before halting again. Once more, it was because of Dwayne.

“Where are you rushing off to so urgently, Your Highness?”
