Late at night, Caliph could not sleep at all. It wasn’t just tonight—yesterday and the day before, he had barely slept, staying wide awake through the night.

Accumulated exhaustion had roughened his skin, darkened the hollows beneath his eyes, and his eyes themselves were so bloodshot that the whites were nearly impossible to see.

Yet, as if afflicted by some illness that robbed him of sleep, his gaze grew even sharper at night, staring longingly toward some unknown place.

Felix, unable to bear it any longer, snapped at Caliph.

“Have you decided to die? Now that things have gotten complicated, have you made up your mind to kill yourself like this?”

Felix sneered harshly, but the worry laced in his voice was genuine. For several days already, Caliph had stood guard by the window in this late hour when everyone else was asleep.

Felix had tried everything—soothing him, scolding him, doing whatever he could—but Caliph had done nothing but repeat the same behavior for days. And now was no different.

“Hey, are you even listening to me?”

“……I can’t sleep.”

“Of course you can’t sleep if you keep staring out the window all night. Stop it and lie down already.”

Felix ran his fingers irritably through his hair and glared at Caliph with furrowed brows. Caliph couldn’t possibly have missed the look, yet he didn’t spare even a fleeting glance.

His face, fixed stubbornly toward the world beyond the window, felt unbearably obstinate. Felix shuddered and let out a deep sigh.

Thus, meaningless time dragged on for quite a while. Just as Felix, exhausted beyond endurance, collapsed onto the long sofa, Caliph’s voice came, whispering softly.

“Is she asleep?”

“What are you talking about now?”
