Edwik could not leave his study as evening deepened. It was because of a message he had received earlier that afternoon.

Because of this, Edwik could not keep his promise to Ibelia. It was obvious as daylight why she had come to see him again that early morning.

Edwik exhaled the breath caught in his throat and reached for the teacup prepared by the head butler. Though it had been served long ago and had lost its warmth, it was still sufficient to quench his thirst.

It was just as he tilted the cup for the third time to relieve one of those intermittent bouts of thirst that a heavy knock echoed through the study.

Edwik rose from his seat as if he had been expecting it. Soon the door opened, and Jade, whom he had been waiting for, appeared through the gap.

“Father.”

“Yes, Jade. You’ve come.”

Edwik quickly stepped toward Jade, gently took his son’s hand, and guided him toward the sofa.

Jade looked utterly exhausted—understandably so.

Even seasoned knights required two full days of hard riding to travel from the capital to their estate, yet Jade had accomplished it in just six days.
