Sister, I'm the Queen This Life (330 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 41
The day of Ariadne’s debutante ball was a clear late-summer day, with the sky high and fluffy clouds just brushing the western horizon.
On such a day, any debutante would typically wait in front of her dressing table in her room, careful not to let her carefully applied makeup melt away in perspiration—but Ariadne had been personally directing nearly forty servants since dawn, decorating the grand hall and first-floor entrance of Cardinal de Mare’s residence, which would serve as the ball venue.
“There! Those carrying potted flowering shrubs, lift them carefully so they don’t scrape the floor and place them precisely where assigned!”
Though Ariadne’s sense for fashion, decoration, and all things beautiful was somewhat lacking, Sancha compensated for it brilliantly.
Whenever Ariadne described her vision for interior decoration—or, more accurately, faithfully recounted actual interiors she’d seen in her past life—Sancha could bring them to life in the real world based solely on that description.
“Tie each bouquet of fresh-cut flowers in their pre-designated spots, and move the branch ornaments to the center!”
Ariadne had completely removed the tapestries typically central to aristocratic balls—those which “told a story.” Instead of commissioning new tablecloths, rail covers, or chair covers, she opted to unify everything with standard white linens found in any noble household, thus controlling additional expenses.
Instead, she’d sent workers into the forests belonging to the Bergamo estate to harvest large quantities of white crape myrtle. The white crape myrtle was a type of shrub that didn’t grow very tall, and in late summer it bloomed abundantly with pure white flowers covering the entire tree.
She had entire flowering branches cut and distributed among artificially arranged planters and vases, transforming the interior into a veritable forest. The resulting décor gave guests the fantastical impression of stepping directly into a woodland glade.
Inside the main reception hall on the first floor of Cardinal de Mare’s residence—the designated ballroom—the only element reminding one of an indoor space was the de Mare family crest displayed prominently on the wall. The violet dolphin emblem clashed slightly with the white crape myrtle branches, but that couldn’t be helped.
‘After all, one must cater to the wishes of the one footing the bill.’
Cardinal de Mare hadn’t sponsored this ball out of affection for his clever second daughter; rather, it was to proudly showcase the rising prominence of House de Mare in San Carlo.
Now that House de Mare had a new “product” to unveil—their second daughter, Ariadne de Mare—they were inviting everyone to come and see for themselves.
Just as a product launch couldn’t happen without its brand logo, today’s debutante ball simply couldn’t exclude the de Mare family’s violet dolphin crest.
“Miss, now that it’s decorated exactly as you requested, it truly is unusual and luxurious!”
