Every attendee in the ballroom paid him the same deference as if they were in the presence of the King himself.
Savoring the thrilling sensation running up his spine, he rolled the parchment back up and handed it to his attendant beside him. Only then did he turn to Cardinal de Mare on the podium and bow slightly in greeting.
“I am honored to meet you today, Your Eminence Cardinal de Mare.”
Cardinal de Mare returned the bow.
“Count Cesare. It is our great honor that you grace our humble household with your presence.”
“I shall take excellent care of your daughter for the entirety of this day.”
“We are truly grateful to His Majesty the King.”
Cesare gave a slight nod, accepting the implied gratitude on behalf of the King.
He descended from the podium alongside Cardinal de Mare and began walking toward the opposite end of the main hall—toward the dais where Ariadne and Prince Alfonso stood.
It resembled a triumphant general’s procession. Cesare traversed the ballroom like its true master, drawing every eye upon himself. Only the guests who had witnessed Prince Alfonso’s entrance moments earlier murmured among themselves.
‘⋯⋯!’
Upon reaching the dais, Cesare finally noticed Prince Alfonso standing below it. Observing Alfonso’s expression, posture, pristine white attire, and the way he had escorted Ariadne, a dangerous smile crept onto Cesare’s lips.
