“……So. You’re telling me to use this room?”

“Yes. Is there something about it that displeases you?”

‘As if it wouldn’t please me.’

It was so lavish it had gone beyond overwhelming into outright discomfort. The moment Lina stepped into the room the maid had led her to, her words caught in her throat.

Ornate paintings adorned the ceiling. A luxurious rug, said to be made only in the south. Clearly, this was no room meant for a maid.

‘I was told they’d assign me a separate room—I expected at best a small corner chamber.’

Usually, when a noble’s maid visited another estate, she either shared a bed in the existing maids’ quarters or, if lucky, received a room of her own.

So when they said she’d be given her own room, she’d been delighted—thinking she’d gotten lucky with a private space. That joy had instantly turned cold the moment she saw the room.

The maid’s overly deferential attitude, as if addressing a noble herself, made Lina feel as though she’d somehow become a noble lady.

‘They must surely think I’m the Duke’s mistress.’

Rumors had spread far and wide—even reaching the distant capital—from Permanence Estate. There was no way they hadn’t reached this closer location.

But now, she no longer had the strength to confront the Duke about those rumors.

After all, the Duke acted as though he truly didn’t care about such gossip—in fact, he kept doing things that only fueled others’ misunderstandings.

Lina herself was gradually coming to terms with the situation.

“I thought you might be tired, so I’ve prepared a bath. Would you like to wash first?”
