The raindrops, which had begun as just a few scattered drops, gradually intensified until they poured down in a torrential deluge. As a result, the soil—barely beginning to dry—once again turned muddy and slick.

With every step sinking deeply into the soft earth, Belige’s pace slowed like that of a man weighed down by sandbags.

“Damn it.”

He muttered a low curse as he stretched his increasingly heavy legs.

Judging by the state of the ground, if the rain continued to worsen like this, the weakened foundation collapsing was only a matter of time.

When Belige lifted his head and looked up, sparse trees rising at the end of the slope came into view.

As he followed the river flowing to the left, the ground grew steeper and more sharply eroded, while beside it, the fierce river churned violently.

“The cliff edge touching the river must be the most dangerous.”

Although the roots of Hyperion trees spread throughout the hillside, it still wouldn’t all collapse at once.

Elsewhere—except for the very edge of the cliff bordering the Curpheet River—other trees already rooted there would likely serve as some support. So long as Lina hadn’t gone there, she should be safe.

But what if Lina was right at the cliff’s edge?

Anxious at this grim possibility, Belige quickened his pace slightly. He’d already reached midway up the hill, yet not a single strand of hair from the person he desperately sought was in sight.

“Where on earth could she be?”

Could that man have seen wrongly just a moment ago? Or had they somehow taken different paths?

As helpless time slipped away, an inexplicable unease seemed to consume his entire being.
