Not long ago, Eun Seo—who hadn’t known that Sung Tae, the former youth association president, never returned the key after lending the village hall to travelers—ran straight into him in front of the bathroom.

Her eyes greedily stared at the water droplets falling from his black hair down his pale nape.

The moment she registered the bloodshot red veins glaring fiercely right in front of her, Eun Seo shoved Sung Tae with all her strength and bolted into the room.

If the front door had been closer, she would have chosen that route, but unfortunately it was behind Sung Tae, and the choice she made was the height of rational judgment.

Only then did his slurred, drunken voice begin to echo.

Her phone, which could call 112, was in the living room, and the bedroom window was firmly barred for security. There was nowhere to escape.

The most she could do was open the window in hopes someone passing by might hear.

“Eun Seo-ya, open the door! Why the hell are you avoiding me!!”

‘Mister, why are you acting like this…’ The words rose to her throat, but fearing she’d provoke him further, Eun Seo barely swallowed even her bursting sobs.

She tried to cool her head and carefully scanned every corner of the room.

“Eun Seo-ya! Just once—open this damn door! I could smash it with a hammer if I wanted! Come out while I’m asking nicely!!”

A mop. In one corner stood a mop used for wiping the floor, leaning diagonally with the cloth attached.

It was a light aluminum pole, but she knew from childhood—having been beaten by her grandmother—that it was no toy.

The cold, merciless sensation that once wrapped around her calves and thighs. The pain of muscles tearing and bones feeling like they’d shatter into pieces the moment it struck.

Could she knock him out with one swing and run outside?

No one would be near the village hall at this hour, but if luck was on her side, she might be able to shake off the drunken Sung Tae.

Hiding and running had been her specialties since childhood—skills honed escaping her enraged grandmother.

“Come out right now before I drag you out!”

Thud! The sound of a foot kicking the door. The recoil made Eun Seo’s hips jolted backward.

“You have nowhere to go anyway. That old hag ate everything and left, didn’t she!”

A damp, sinister sound—impossible to tell whether crying or laughing—grotesquely gripped the room. Her heart felt like it would leap out of her chest; chills raced down her spine and spread through her whole body.

“Just once, Eun Seo-ya, please!”

Eun Seo crawled away from the door toward the mop. Judging by how the gap in sound was narrowing, the door would give any second.

The moment she grabbed the pole, intending to strike anywhere on Sung Tae, she began twisting the head to pull the rod free.

Thwack! With the sound of a kick, a long crack appeared in the center of the plywood door.

Eun Seo, briefly frozen, spun her hands faster. Thud again! The vertical crack widened with a snap, and the plywood split apart.

Just open the door. I’ll kill you first.

The instant Eun Seo swung the pole through the air in practice, the handle was ripped from the door by bull-like strength—BANG!—and the door flew open with a deafening crash.

Not missing the moment, Eun Seo powerfully slashed the pole through the air. CLANG!

“Arghhh!!”

Sung Tae, struck squarely on the shoulder, let out a pained groan.

But just as Eun Seo raised the pole again to swing, a thick hand snatched it in an instant, flung it to the floor, grabbed her shoulders, and pinned her into the corner.

Screeeech—her feet slid across the floor as her body was helplessly pushed back.

“You really want to die that badly?!”

Greedy eyes coiled around Eun Seo like a serpent—Crash!—sharp glass shards sliced through the air.

The moment Sung Tae turned his head right to grasp the situation, his head was violently jerked the opposite way.

Thud—a black dress shoe slammed into his chest, and as Sung Tae collapsed backward, his nape was crushed like paper.

“Ha, you little bastard. You play real dirty.”

With those cold words, the owner of the voice—backlit—cast a solid shadow against the wall.

It was Kwon Tae Ha.

Groaning as if his breath would stop, Sung Tae flailed his limbs like a dying gazelle.

In overwhelming pain, his thick hands desperately clutched Tae Ha’s ankle, but even those were mercilessly kicked away by the other foot.

The arm that flew up and fell swelled red instantly and bent at an unnatural angle. His eyelids spasmed and rolled back.

“Ugh… urk… who… who the…”

“Song Eun Seo’s husband.”

Cold eyes without a trace of warmth dominated the space.

“Kill him, Tae Ha-ya.”

Woo Young, who had entered behind, placed a hand on Tae Ha’s trembling shoulder and added fuel to the fire. Then he removed his jacket and draped it over Eun Seo, who sat collapsed and shaking, eyes unfocused.

“Why are you closing your eyes? Praying?”

Sung Tae’s eyes beneath their feet widened in terror.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

The man towering above looked like a beast that had smelled blood; his voice, swallowed by darkness, evoked primal fear.

I’m really going to die here.

His shallow breaths grew ragged. The once-bright bulb flickered gray; thick veins bulged and throbbed at his blood-smeared temples.

Crunch, crunch—the sound of his nape being crushed was horrifyingly vivid. The earthy smell from the shoe sole was the scent of a grave.

“Tae Ha-ya. I don’t want to see your name on the front page tomorrow. Then I’ll get busy.”

At Woo Young’s soft call, the foot that had hesitated pressed down harder once more before slowly lifting from the throat.

Gurgle, hack, hack. Unable to even stand, Sung Tae rolled to the side, violently vomiting trapped air and gasping desperately.

As color returned to his face, Tae Ha took one step forward; Sung Tae, eyes fixed on that foot, flinched and curled into a ball.

“Let’s go.”

Tae Ha scooped Eun Seo—jacket and all—into his arms.

He didn’t like it, but he couldn’t bring himself to tell her to walk.

“Woo Young-ah, clean this up and come up. I’ll send the car.”

“Forget the car. More importantly—can you drive with that arm?”

Only then did Tae Ha’s gaze follow Woo Young’s to his right arm. The lower sleeve of his shirt was completely soaked in vivid red.

He hadn’t even felt the pain—maybe adrenaline, but compared to the excruciating agony in his shoulder blade earlier, it was nothing.

Come to think of it, that unprecedented pain tormenting him had completely stopped.

Tae Ha gave a small nod and left the hall. She must have been terribly shocked; even held in his arms, Eun Seo didn’t make a single loud breath.

Woo Young opened the passenger door and reclined the seat fully. After fastening Eun Seo’s seatbelt and setting her shoes down, he closed the door.

“What about the chairman…”

Tae Ha raised his index finger to his lips.

“Quiet.”

“Where are we going?”

“The hotel has too many eyes; it’ll reach Father. We can’t go to the police without a plan. Nothing’s more fatal than rumors that Kwon Tae Ha was a victim of marriage fraud.”

“So?”

“We go somewhere secure with no chance of leaks.”

Woo Young understood and nodded readily.

“Everything else is fine, but treat that wound first.”

“I’ll handle it. Just take care of that bastard.”

As Woo Young turned and disappeared, Tae Ha climbed into the driver’s seat. He loosened his tie knot with his teeth, undid his cufflinks, and rolled up his sleeve.

The wound ran below the elbow—a sharp, elongated cut about 5 cm long.

The village hall had been locked tight; the thudding kicks had echoed through the walls. Through the open window came the violent sounds of the door being kicked. Between them, he had seen a terrified woman clutching a pole, desperately trying to survive.

He hadn’t hesitated. Tae Ha wrapped his suit jacket around his arm several times and smashed straight through the living-room window that had no bars.

He roughly cleared the glass shards still attached to the frame, used the wall as leverage, and vaulted inside. That must have been when the cut happened.

“I’ll do it.”

Eun Seo, somehow now sitting upright in the seat, spoke. Tae Ha, eyes lowered, offered his arm along with the tie instead of refusing.

Eun Seo calmly wrapped the tie tightly above the wound.

“The scratch is pretty deep. We should stop at an ER on the way.”

“It’s not that bad.”

“What do we do…”

Her brows, furrowed after witnessing something horrific, moved busily.

Warm body heat gently seeped through thin skin. Neat, unadorned fingers moved carefully and swiftly over his solid forearm.

But silk fabric was uncooperative; it kept slipping and the knot loosened repeatedly. Watching her, Tae Ha let out a hollow chuckle rather than a sigh.

She was trying so hard, even insisting on doing it herself—probably out of pride.

Eun Seo’s focused brows rose high. Only after a couple more failures did the knot finally hold.

When she released his arm, Tae Ha gave it a light shake and placed his hands on the wheel. Watching him slowly turn the car, Eun Seo spoke.

“It’s late, but… thank you for saving me.”

Tae Ha acknowledged with a slight tilt of his head.

“But… why did you help me? You thought I was a con artist.”

She hadn’t asked how he got there, yet wanted to know why he helped.

“Because.”

After a long silence, the answer was simple.

“You have no home, so you were staying at the village hall. If you ran, I’d have to track you down the hard way.”

“Ah, right… that makes sense.”

Eun Seo gave a self-mocking smile.

“But you’re wrong. Even if I wanted to run, I have nowhere to go. Pretty pathetic, huh?”

“Then tonight, run to me.”

Inside the car so quiet even breathing felt like conversation, Eun Seo’s gaze slowly seeped into Tae Ha’s steady eyes.

“Where are we really going?”

“What, scared I’ll take you to the police station?”

It was a light joke, but Eun Seo didn’t laugh.

“The police station would be fine too. Right now I need even a holding cell. At this point I don’t care where I end up.”

“You don’t care?”

“Yes.”

She really didn’t seem like a con artist. Her eyes that said “come what may” were dry as taxidermy. Following her downward gaze, Tae Ha’s deep voice echoed back.

“How do you know where I’m taking you?”
