“Hello.”

Swish—the sliding door opened, and Woo Young stepped into Solnae Trading Company. At his entrance, everyone who had been sitting on the floor mats playing hwatu looked up from their game.

The stranger from the city was quite handsome, and in this place, not even a well-known tourist spot, his appearance was anything but common.

Woo Young took a canned coffee from the refrigerator, placed it on the counter, and pulled out his wallet.

“I’d like to pay.”

The Women’s Association President took the bill and handed him a few coins from the cash register.

“Keep the change.”

Noticing the shop owner’s smile brighten, Woo Young carefully asked,

“Does a woman named Song Eun Seo live in this village by any chance?”

He had already confirmed that Eun Seo had returned home; this was merely him faithfully carrying out Tae Ha’s instructions—

to find out what kind of woman she was.

“Eun Seo?”

“Brother, they’re talking about Eun Seo.”

“Why Eun Seo?”

Unlike before, the villagers now eyed him warily. Woo Young responded with a faint smile.

“I just came to return something she left behind.”

“Where are you from?”

“Seoul.”

“Seoul?”

“Didn’t she say she’d go back to studying? Maybe she went to check on that. She’s always been doing translations—something in a foreign language or whatever.”

“Then what about Sung Tae? At this rate, isn’t he going to end up like a duck egg abandoned in the Nakdong River?”

Cutting through the murmuring crowd came an unfamiliar yet unsettling name: ‘Sung Tae.’ Clearly a man’s name—possibly the very VIP information his client sought.

“Sung Tae? Who’s that?”

Woo Young popped open his can, took a sip, and casually joined the conversation.

“He’s the one who’s supposed to marry Eun Seo.”

Ah.

“So she already has someone she’s going to marry. I had my suspicions.”

“Of course she does. Why? Don’t tell me you came all the way from Seoul just to see Eun Seo?”

“Well… sort of, yes.”

At that, Sung Tae’s mother, who had been silently watching, stepped forward. Clearly, if this went on, her Eun Seo might be snatched away by this well-groomed bachelor from Seoul.

“Hey, young man from Seoul. Don’t go setting your sights on village girls who belong to others. Our rural bachelors already struggle to find wives—they roam abroad desperately searching, eyes worn out. Eun Seo is my future daughter-in-law; it’s been settled since childhood. Let me tell you this: you seem to have everything going for you—why covet Eun Seo?”

“Exactly, exactly. It’s all settled between them. Ever since Eun Seo’s grandmother passed, she’s been all alone—so now they’re just waiting to get married and live together. The only issue is that Eun Seo has nothing to her name, but Sung Tae says he doesn’t care about any of that.”

The situation was becoming clear.

Eun Seo and Sung Tae had been promised to each other since long ago. Now that her grandmother had died and she was left alone, Sung Tae, moved by pity, was preparing to marry her soon.

Though the full details remained unclear, Woo Young couldn’t help but wonder—had Song Eun Seo perhaps targeted Tae Ha to raise money for her wedding?

Unfortunately for her, Tae Ha was neither someone a country bumpkin could easily approach nor an easy mark.

What a reckless move.

Knowing his best friend and employer Tae Ha all too well, Woo Young silently prayed for divine protection over Eun Seo, downed the rest of his coffee in one gulp, and crumpled the can.

“Excuse me.”

Woo Young slid open the door, intending to report back to Tae Ha. Stepping outside into the cold wind, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone.

As the call connected, Tae Ha’s slightly drowsy voice came through the receiver. After silently listening to Woo Young’s account of Eun Seo, Tae Ha said,

“I’ll be right there.”

It was a tone so icy, Woo Young could barely recall ever hearing it before from his friend.

Moreover, those words clearly meant: don’t come back to Seoul yet—keep watching over Eun Seo. Reluctantly, Woo Young turned toward the house where Eun Seo had stayed the previous night.

* * *

After hanging up, Tae Ha braced his waist and pushed himself upright against the pillow. The sharp pain had been intermittent, and oddly enough, it had nearly vanished the moment he’d declared his intention to go see Eun Seo.

His fainting spell had been brief, and after doctors assured him there was nothing seriously wrong, he’d torn off his IV drip and bandages and left the hospital.

Before departing, he’d instructed staff not to inform his father, Chairman Kwon—but he knew the news would likely reach him anyway.

Ignoring his chauffeur’s pleas, Tae Ha took the wheel himself and entered the address Woo Young had sent into the navigation system.

It was quite a long drive.

Sung Tae, was it?

She had a man already—and yet dared to act so boldly?

What absurdity—cheating on me, of all people! Of the two cakes she held, she chose to discard none other than Kwon Tae Ha.

Ha. Short of grinding her to dust and drinking the ashes, nothing would feel satisfying.

As he sped down the highway, Tae Ha tried to piece things together.

According to Woo Young, the documents weren’t forged. Eun Seo’s grandmother had filed the marriage registration herself—and Song Eun Seo was likely behind it all.

She probably didn’t even realize such a marriage wouldn’t legally stand, and must have planned to extract money from me somehow.

But then, unexpectedly, her grandmother died, accelerating plans for her marriage to Sung Tae.

That’s why she urgently needed to sort out the paperwork with me.

No—this still doesn’t make sense. No matter how I rationalize it, it’s illogical.

Someone who managed to file such a flawless marriage registration couldn’t possibly be that clueless.

And how could she have known all my personal details? Was there someone on my side assisting her?

His thoughts churned chaotically as the car raced endlessly down the road.

* * *

After driving nonstop for several hours, Tae Ha finally met Woo Young in front of a single-story village community center with white exterior walls.

Evening in the countryside was unlike Seoul—once night fell, pitch-black darkness spread like a beast opening its maw, its black tongue unfurling across the land.

“Why here?”

Faced with Tae Ha’s blunt question, Woo Young briefed him on the information he’d gathered from wandering around the village all day.

“It seems her lease expired. Song Eun Seo apparently had no idea. When told the new owner would start renovations today, she hastily packed her things and moved out. With nowhere else to go right now, she’s staying at the village center for tonight.”

“So she really has nowhere to go?”

“No relatives have come looking for her. Honestly, aside from this incident, she’s perfectly ordinary—no criminal record, good reputation. Though it seems her grandmother treated her terribly, although things had improved recently. Also, the grandmother showed signs of dementia before she passed.”

Tae Ha clicked his tongue softly.

“Still, if she’s about to marry this Sung Tae guy, her living situation probably won’t change right away. Even if she tries to run, we have her resident registration number, and tracking her isn’t beyond your capabilities. How about we head back now and resume the investigation tomorrow?”

But Tae Ha remained unmoved. Woo Young tapped the steering wheel with a helpless finger and voiced his concern.

“If you’re not going right now, at least grab dinner first. You fainted earlier, remember? Sure, learning about her engagement is shocking—but is collapsing really something you’d normally do?”

And for good reason—Chairman Kwon, Tae Ha’s father, loved his son deeply, and that love manifested as rigorous training in every aspect of life.

Beyond academics, Tae Ha’s physical conditioning had been so intense it was called “brutal.”

Swimming, kendo, and tennis were basics; shooting, boxing, martial arts, fencing, and self-defense were all mandatory. Among acquaintances, he was nicknamed “human weapon.”

His constitution was so ironclad even colds avoided him—so for Tae Ha to faint was genuinely alarming. No wonder Woo Young, his longtime friend, was worried.

“Fine. We’ve confirmed where she is, and you must be exhausted too.”

He needed to see for himself who this person was—daring enough to play such a bold game with him.

Yet… was this truly all there was to her?

“Let’s go.”

No sooner had the words left his mouth than the headlights swiveled, sweeping across the quiet wall of the community center.

Someone stood in the beam of light, shielding their eyes with both hands. Though not tall, the figure had a solid build—clearly male.

Tae Ha’s eyes tracked the man through the side mirror. The man hesitated, then staggered toward the main entrance of the community center.

Apparently, quite a few people used the village center even at this hour.

“Did you say Song Eun Seo moved her belongings alone?”

“Yeah. She didn’t have much, but even then, she was really struggling by herself.”

“Why didn’t she ask anyone for help?”

“Countryside folks are always busy.”

“If it were your girlfriend in that situation—having to move her stuff alone—what would you do?”

“What do you mean? I’d take leave from work and help her, of course.”

“Exactly. That’s what anyone would do. And you certainly wouldn’t let her stay overnight in a village center….”

Ah—was that man from earlier Sung Tae? Maybe he was coming to take Eun Seo home now.

The thought was utterly foul. And to top it off, that faint, burning discomfort—the unpleasant pain—had started again.

Before leaving the village, the two men stopped by Solnae Trading Company to buy water and coffee. Recognizing Woo Young as the visitor from earlier, the Women’s Association President greeted him warmly.

“So you’re heading back now?”

“Yes, we’re about to leave.”

“I see another person with you.”

“A friend.”

The Women’s Association President couldn’t take her eyes off the strikingly tall Tae Ha as she put the money into the register.

“By the way—did you manage to give Eun Seo that item properly?”

“Not yet.”

“Oh dear—you couldn’t find her, I suppose. Just give it to me; I’ll pass it along.”

Woo Young was flustered as she held out her hand—he had nothing to give.

“No, no, I’ll deliver it myself later.”

“You must truly care about Eun Seo—going out of your way to meet her in person like this.”

Tae Ha raised an eyebrow at the odd remark, but the Women’s Association President, unfazed, chattered on like Scheherazade from the Arabian Nights.

“If you’ve got feelings, be bold like a real man! Hesitating like that won’t get you anywhere.”

“But doesn’t she have a fiancé?”

Woo Young’s indifferent comment made the Women’s Association President wave her hand dismissively and frown.

“What fiancé?”

“The elders said just now she has someone she’s supposed to marry.”

“Sung Tae? Oh, nonsense. The village uncles just feel sorry he’s still unmarried past forty, so they’re pushing the idea. Sung Tae might be eyeing Eun Seo, but she has no interest in him whatsoever.”

“…”

“How much older is he anyway? He’s not a thief—sixteen years! Why fixate on her like that? There’s such a thing as decency in greed. Anyway, now that Eun Seo’s alone, that despicable man’s acting up again. Ever since she was in high school, the way he looked at her wasn’t right. Sigh… What kind of girl is Eun Seo anyway? Such a kind soul.”

The two men’s eyes locked midair.

In Tae Ha’s mind, the image of the man staggering into the village center’s entrance flashed like lightning—clearly drunk out of his mind.

Damn it.

Overwhelmed by sudden dread, Tae Ha dropped what he was holding and sprinted back to the car.

The sharp pain radiating along his scapula intensified.

Damn this infernal ache—why now, of all times?

At that very moment, Eun Seo was desperately bracing the door shut from the inside of a room in the community center, pressing her back firmly against it.

“Eun Seoooo! Song Eun Seoooo!!”

A violent shout pierced through the thin door, sending chills down Eun Seo’s entire body.
