She grabbed my hand suddenly and looked up at me with eyes brimming with tears, deeply moved as she spoke.

“Thank you so much. Truly… for saving me from being buried alive. The thought that I might have woken up inside that coffin is absolutely horrifying.”

“Waking up in a coffin? That wouldn’t have happened. Besides, it’s because your father cared for you with the utmost devotion that you’ve recovered so well. Without that, something terrible might have happened before I even had a chance to treat you.”

At my words, the gravedigger, who had been sobbing for a long while, stepped forward in her stead.

“No, Doctor—you truly are the savior of our lives, my daughter’s and mine. My wife passed away early, and she is all the family I have left… If she had died too, I would have taken my own life as well.”

“Dad, don’t say things like that. You still have to live.”

“What meaning would my life have without you?”

“Dad…”

The father and daughter reaffirmed their deep affection for one another, and once again embraced tearfully, overwhelmed by emotion.

“We should probably go now.”

Gravedigger flowers still bloomed in clusters throughout the graveyard. The blossoms that glowed fluorescently at night now shimmered in the daylight, their pure white petals basking in the sun.
