“That’s true. Most nobles display books in their libraries merely to flaunt their intellectual vanity, and botany isn’t exactly popular.”

“For me, though I couldn’t really afford it, books on herbalism or botany weren’t outrageously expensive compared to other fields. I could buy one with a week’s worth of food money. In fact, the bookstore owner often set aside such books just for me, saying I was practically the only one who ever asked for them.”

Merchants importing foreign books rarely selected specific titles when bringing them from other countries. Often, they’d purchase entire crates, sort through them later, and then price and sell them accordingly.

During that process, the botany and herbalism books that accidentally came along were seen as useless, taking up space for no reason. That’s precisely why they were so cheap.
