Simmons had never once apologized to me. Of course, he’d never apologized on Ian’s behalf either.

If anyone ever apologized, it was always me. Naturally, Simmons had never wronged me in the first place… yet today, despite it not even being his fault, I was expected to accept an apology from him….

When I came downstairs after finishing my preparations to head to the imperial capital, Simmons was sipping tea in the reception room.

Ileina had instructed me to receive a formal apology from him, but since he was essentially the Crown Prince’s right hand, they clearly couldn’t treat him carelessly—so they’d prepared refreshments in the reception room and were hosting him respectfully.

“I’m sorry to have summoned you to the imperial capital so abruptly.”

Simmons offered a brief apology. Having expected an extravagant apology after Ileina’s warning, I’d been tense—but fortunately, it felt more like a request for understanding than an actual apology. It wasn’t humiliating at all; rather, it seemed dignified, perhaps because of the way he carried himself.

“No, Chief Steward Simmons, you have nothing to apologize for. Instead, may I ask why you’ve summoned me so suddenly?”

“…I don’t know the details myself, but I was told it’s related to the healers and extremely urgent.”

“Ah! I knew it….”

Hearing his explanation, it seemed clear this concerned my healer’s license. If I’d simply become a healer, all they needed to do was send the license to the manor—yet they’d sent this errand to Chief Steward Simmons, whose joints were already in poor condition….

“Do you have any idea what this might be about?”

“No. I suppose I’ll only find out once we get there.”

“The carriage is ready. Please come with me.”

“Yes.”

Though inwardly grumbling at Ian, I followed Simmons out.
