Jane comes to the imperial capital once a week with her apothecary grandfather to treat Ian.

When he begged her to visit every day, she firmly refused, explaining she had other sick patients to care for and that monitoring his condition and prescribing medicine once a week was sufficient.

But it wasn’t enough for Ian. He wanted to spend more time with her.

He wished he could keep her by his side all day long. Yet he understood that Jane didn’t desire that. She was someone who could never live like his own mother.

Ian knew well that if he selfishly forced her to stay in the imperial capital against her will, she would leave the country immediately with her grandfather, without a moment’s hesitation.

So he cut his palm. He knew for certain that if he claimed to be unwell, she would come running without fail.

“Why on earth do you need sword training at just eight years old? You’re the Crown Prince. Just have knights handle dangerous blades for you, isn’t that what they’re for?”

“But I can’t skip sword training.”

He shivered slightly, showing anxiety as if skipping training would put his very life in danger.

“Your Royal Highness….”

He could almost picture the absurd scenario she was imagining in her head.

A frail Crown Prince, unloved by the Emperor and ignored by the Empress.

She must think he was enduring sword training against his will just to earn their approval. With her vivid imagination, she might even be picturing him being targeted by assassins.

She, an orphaned commoner caring alone for her blind grandfather, pitied Ian—the Emperor’s legitimate firstborn and Crown Prince. It was rather contradictory, but he didn’t care. In fact, Ian encouraged her misunderstanding.

He wished for her to love him, but if that proved impossible, he wanted her to see him as pitiful and sorrowful—so much so that she could never bring herself to leave him.
