“It’s scalding hot. You must have a really high fever.”

When I checked earlier, it didn’t feel that bad—maybe I was mistaken. Come to think of it, Ileina’s voice also sounded a bit hoarse.

“I thought my fever wasn’t that bad.”

Now that I was aware of it, even the area above my lip felt burning hot; it seemed like every breath I exhaled was warm air, though my body itself felt chilled and shivery.

At my muttering, Ileina once again placed one hand on her own forehead and the other on mine to compare our temperatures.

Worry was clearly written all over Ileina’s face.

“Are you laughing? Right now? When your body feels like a burning fire?”

It seemed I had chuckled unconsciously at Ileina’s reaction. But it had simply felt nice—someone worrying about me when I was sick was something I hadn’t experienced in so long.

Back when I was Jane, I rarely fell ill due to my robust constitution, and even when I did, I’d be up and about again after just a day.

Still, even a single day of sickness was painful and lonely. Lying curled up under the covers in the small room at the corner of the apothecary, enduring the pain alone, often left me feeling terribly isolated—especially since someone with family would at least receive care.

Still, when Grandfather was alive, he’d prepare his special herbal remedy for me, warm up the room, and let me rest properly.

Even though he was blind, Grandfather knew the apothecary so well that he could tell exactly where everything was better than someone with sight. Just by listening to my breathing, he could discern my condition while examining herbs.

Sometimes he’d bring me water, sometimes porridge, and always carefully tucked the blanket around me. At such moments, I’d feel oddly embarrassed, realizing I was someone being cared for.

But after Grandfather passed away, there was no one left to look after me—that loneliness had been utterly heartbreaking.
