“Let the ones in the basement run if they try.”

Before departing for battle, the Duke summoned Alex and gave him a private order.

It was incomprehensible—but a master’s command was never meant to be understood.

“Obedience.”

It was simply something one must follow.

Thus, Alex stood watch, fully aware that the prisoners below were throwing off their handcuffs and slipping out of their cells like rats, yet doing nothing to stop them.

He stood at the end of the third-floor corridor—

the landing at the top of the second-floor stairs and the entrance to the third floor.

The Duke had said to let those who fled go.

But those who didn’t flee…

“May I kill them, then?”

Alex pressed his sword against the neck of a man who had just begun climbing to the third floor.

Beneath the merciless blade, the man’s neck immediately began to soak with blood.

“Wait, wait! Just hold on!”

The terrified man raised both hands, but Alex not only refused to lower his sword—he twisted the man’s wrist and pressed the blade even more threateningly against his throat.
