It was the first time she’d been alone in an unfamiliar room. Essela clasped her hands together to suppress her unease. Even the pink diamond necklace felt unusually cold today.

Her throat was parched. She longed for even a warm cup of tea. But the tea brought by the seemingly aloof butler had long since gone cold.

It felt like quite some time had passed since she arrived here, yet the door showed no sign of opening.

Unconsciously gazing toward the door with hope in her eyes, Essela suddenly recalled a cold voice echoing in her mind.

“If you can honestly say you expect nothing, I’ll let you in.”

Those words were true. Yet still, Essela kept looking at the door. She lowered her head again.

Don’t hope. Just being allowed in here was already more than she deserved. So—don’t hope to see her sister.

Essela kept turning the duke’s words over in her mind.

As dusk began to fall, Essela had slipped away from Madelaine Manor with Veronica and Sally’s help and arrived at Bicander Duke’s estate. There was no way into the tightly sealed manor—she could only wait for her sister, who was supposedly out.

Just as the dimming sky turned fully dark, a carriage halted before the gate, and that icy voice poured down upon Essela’s head.

Through the carriage window, which she glanced up at absentmindedly, appeared Duke Bicander.

A man so breathtakingly beautiful he stole one’s breath—yet so chilling he hardly seemed human.

Ordinarily, Essela would have frozen in place. But something gave her courage. Clutching tightly the pink diamond necklace in her hand, she spoke toward the duke.

“…U-um, Essela Madelaine wishes to pay respects to His Grace, the great hero Duke Bicander. Please just tell my sister I’ve come.”

Where had all her lessons about grace and composure gone? Her voice trembled terribly as it left her lips.
