Essela found out. How—no, how much.

Her mind went blank white.

She’d always thought Essela would find out someday. But she’d assumed it would be when she was somewhat prepared—not like this, so sudden and defenseless.

“Essela. Please, listen to me.”

Not knowing what to say, Olivia desperately called out to Essela. Her parched throat ached as if scraped raw from the inside.

Essela, who always smiled with affection, now glared at Olivia. Her eyes were swollen red from crying.

“Essel—”

“Don’t touch me! You’re filthy!”

A sharp scream rang out, followed by the loud smack—-—of skin striking skin.

Olivia stared blankly at the back of her hand. It quickly turned red and hot. But the slow trembling in her hand wasn’t from pain.

Essela’s contempt-laced words pierced Olivia straight through the heart. Her legs went weak, and without realizing it, she stumbled backward a few steps.

Essela herself seemed startled, drawing in a sharp breath. Olivia clenched her jaw, trying to force a reassuring smile—but her lips trembled too violently.

“Does your hand hurt?”

“Don’t pretend to care! How could you, of all people, do this to me!”

The raw accusation in that shrill cry stabbed deep into Olivia.
