“Still, you should’ve chased them down to the very end and at least taken their head. You must completely cut off any sprout that might grow into future trouble.”

Amid the grumbling voices, a flat, emotionless tone cut in.

“What happened to the one who escaped?”

‘It was the Duke.’

“We confirmed that he stopped breathing.”

Peeking my head out slightly, I saw several men gathered, all dressed entirely in black.

I hesitated, wondering whether I should pretend not to notice and just walk past, when the Duke abruptly turned his head.

“Diane.”

The Duke extended a hand toward me. But before I could respond, I spotted a familiar, welcome face among the dark-clad group.

“It’s Yan!”

“Oh, my lady.”

I rushed toward Yan, arms outstretched—but the Duke swiftly caught me mid-motion.

I was briefly airborne before settling quietly into the Duke’s arms.

Blinking in surprise, I stared fixedly at Yan, who kindly explained.

“I’ve just returned from completing my mission. I haven’t even had a chance to bathe, so I’m quite dirty.”
